FINNEY, Harlan Roderick "Bud"
9 July 1928 - 25 April 2015 We bid a fond farewell to Bud Finney, beloved father, "Papa", friend, master gardener, fisherman, soil scientist, etc. He died of complications resulting from a fall after a walk on a sunny Minnesota spring day. Born and reared on a farm in Newark, Ohio, he was an avid lover of the earth. He spent his boyhood days working on the farm, fishing and attending school. He received B.S. and M.S. degrees from the Ohio State University where he also met and married his wife Marie. In 1962 they moved to Minnesota where he pursued graduate studies in soil science at the University of Minnesota. After completing his Ph.D. in 1966 he was employed by the Soil Conservation Service. Subsequently he created his own consulting business and later worked as an extension agent for the University of Minnesota. In these roles he was able to use his extensive knowledge of soils and land as well as his social skills. Bud loved fishing and the move to Minnesota worked out well for this passion. An avid ice fisher, he never owned an ice-fishing house because it would restrict where he could fish. He relished fishing in the spring, fascinated by the annual explosion of lake productivity. He openly shared his passion, spots, and techniques with many fishing companions over the years. He enjoyed upland bird hunting and had annual trips to northern Minnesota and the Dakotas. He bowled on the Pedons team in the University league most years from 1963 to 2012. And oh, the gardens! Bud and Marie cultivated gorgeous and productive flower, fruit and vegetable gardens at their home of 47 years on Draper Drive in Roseville. He specialized in beans and in some years grew over 50 varieties. Bud was a long-time master gardener and mentored many up and coming gardeners. He was married to Marie for 49 years when she died in 2001. They had two children Deb (who married Jeff Barker) and Bruce (who married Kathleen Condon). Bud loved his grandchildren Bryan and Sarah Barker and relished annual family fishing trips to Northern Lights Resort where he taught them to fish and how to take fish off a line. Bud's later life was enriched by his enduring companionship with Jan Schultz. In addition to his children and grandchildren, he is survived by his sisters Harriet Claypool and Connie Stoneburner. Bud was a man who strongly believed in tradition. One he enjoyed was the lunchtime wiener roast over a campfire while hunting. He was also known for his annual holiday letter and essay on the year in beans. Even in his final weeks he continued making Sunday phone calls to family, always with emphasis on weather and the Twins. A celebration of his life will be held Saturday July 11, 2015, 2:00-4:00pm at Rose Vine Hall, 2801 Snelling Ave, Roseville. For info or to offer a remembrance contact finney@isu.edu. In lieu of flowers please donate to a charity of your choice.
