Passed away peacefully on October 5, 2012 Don was born in Sioux Falls, SD on July 2, 1932 to Joseph and Cora Otterby. He grew up on a dairy farm near Crooks, SD. His early interest in the dairy industry began at the age of 4 when he milked his first cow. He graduated from Lyons High School and attended South Dakota State University, where he majored in Dairy Husbandry. Following his graduation in 1954, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany. In 1956, he was discharged as a 1st Lieutenant. He went on to earn a Master's degree in Dairy Science from SDSU and a Ph.D. in Animal Nutrition from North Carolina State University. In 1963, Don joined the faculty of the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities as a professor of Animal Science. His distinguished career spanned 35 years during which time he made many contributions to the dairy industry through his teaching and research activities. He completed his career as the Head of the Department of Animal Science. His dedication and passion made him well-liked by both students and faculty, and he considered it a privilege to work with them. Upon his retirement, Don was awarded the distinction of Professor Emeritus by the University of Minnesota. Don demonstrated his interest and caring for other people throughout his entire life. He was a devoted and active member of Como Park Lutheran Church for many years. He treasured the lifetime friendships he developed with members of Como Park Lutheran Church, UM students and faculty, EagleCrest Presbyterian homes, family and neighbors. Don had a wonderful sense of humor and a contagious laugh that demonstrated the joy he found in life and the people surrounding him. He will be remembered for the genuine kindness he showed to all and missed by the many people whose lives he touched. Preceded in death by his parents Joseph and Cora Otterby; brothers, Curtis and Leonard Otterby; sister Hazel Moe and brother-in-law Dennis Moe. He is survived by two sisters-in-laws Agnes and Mildred Otterby, 11 nieces and nephews, and many close friends. A memorial service will be held Friday, October 12 at 11:00 a.m. at Como Park Lutheran Church, 1376 Hoyt Avenue West, St. Paul, MN.
