Edward C. JOHNSON

Member Asbestos Workers Local #34 Passed Away November 11, 2013 Age 73, of Ely; originally of St. Paul. Preceded in death by his father, Howard; and mother, Mary (nee Kilbane). Survived by wife of 54 years, Margaret (nee Mondry); brother, Jerome; numerous nephews, nieces, other family and friends. Ed attended Washington HS in St. Paul before joining the Army, where he served three years in Germany with the 3rd ID. After the Army, he became affiliated with Asbestos Workers Local #34, eventually opening his own company, Eagle Pipe Insulation. He spent 41 years in the Union. In the 1970's Ed and Marge began building their retirement home up north, with the help of lots of friends and extended family. Ed was instrumental in establishing Eagles Nest Township in the Ely area. Eventually, Ed and Marge began spending winters in Arizona; he again became very involved in building a better community, serving as president of their condo association. He was a visionary in everything he worked at; his work with the condo association saved thousands of dollars for the residents. Ed suffered a stroke in August of last year, and was hospitalized for three months before his passing. Mass of Christian Burial at THE CHURCH OF ST. BERNARD, 197 W Geranium Ave, St. Paul, on Wednesday, May 14 at 11 AM, with luncheon immediately afterward. Private interment Fort Snelling National Cemetery at a later date.
