Dr. Kenneth Stewart BARKLIND

Age 80, of Edina Died on October 18, 2013 after a long struggle with Alzheimer's/Dementia. Ken was a wonderful husband, father, uncle, cousin and friend. He wanted to be remembered as a good man who stood up for what he believed in. Ken was a Unitarian Universalist Humanist. He worked for world peace because "war is not healthy for children and other living things". Ken was the first in his family to attend college and earned a BA at Macalester College in St. Paul. Ken earned his PhD in Educational and Child Psychology and an MA in Psychology at the University of Minnesota. Ken worked as a school psychologist for St. Paul Public Schools, the Cooperative Schools for Retarded Children (CSRC) at Glen Lake Minnetonka, Bloomington Public Schools, and Minneapolis Public Schools, all K-12. Ken taught Psychology at University of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, Minnesota State University (Mankato and St. Cloud), St. Theresa's College of Winona, and was an Associate Professor and Secretary of Graduate Council at University of Wisconsin. Ken was always interested in helping the most vulnerable and troubled children such as those with intellectual disabilities and the emotionally and behaviorally disturbed. Ken worked with Arc Minnesota to de-institutionalize intellectually disabled people from State institutions. As a volunteer, Ken devoted his time to the annual Tapemark Charity Golf Event for MN Association for Children with Learning Disabilities (MACLD), as a Guardian ad litum for parentless children, and, with his wife Ann and other parents, Ken brought Montessori School to Minnesota where it began as Edina Montessori. Ken donated his body to the University of Minnesota Anatomy Bequest Program for the education of Health Professional students and for medical research. Ken is survived by his wife of 54 years, Annelore Lotter Barklind, daughter Anita Marie Martinez, son Eckhart Kenneth Barklind, son-in-law Eugene Gilbert Martinez, sister Carolyn Abrahamson (John), brothers Charles and Daniel Barklind (Shirley), cousin Rev. John Barklind (Rosemary) and many other beloved relatives and friends. Preceded in death by birth mother Mary Stewart Barklind, father Carl E. Barklind, and step-mother Byrdie Blanding Barklind. Special thanks to all of the caregivers from the Heritage of Edina Tiffany Building, Fairview Hospice, Caring Circles Volunteers of the First Unitarian Society of Minneapolis, and the Gable, Debelak, Hohmann and Sorensen familes. A Memorial Service will be held at The First Unitarian Society of Minneapolis, 900 Mount Curve Ave, Minneapolis on November 16th, 2013 at 1 pm. In leiu of flowers, memorials are preferred to The First Unitarian Society of Minneapolis, , JDRF (Type 1 Diabetes Research Foundation) or donor's choice.
