Loretto Byrne THORSNESS

Beloved Wife, Mother, Grandmother and Great-Grandmother of Maplewood, MN and formerly of Spooner, WI passed peacefully 1/14/2013. Loretto (Laury) was born in Chicago on 7/14/24. She graduated from St. Scholastica Academy and was employed as a bookkeeper at Northwestern University where she met a handsome dental student who was to become her future husband. Laury and John L. Thorsness were married on 10/3/1947. They lived in Spooner, WI for over 55 years, where John practiced dentistry and together they raised their family. Laury's greatest love was her family, and she devoted all of her time to them. She volunteered for many years in many other parish and community activities. She enjoyed a weekly bridge game and was an accomplished baker and a skilled knitter who created many beautiful sweaters. Laury enjoyed many summers at the family cottage on Shell Lake, particularly time spent fishing. She was a lifelong Chicago Cubs fan, even skipping school as a girl to watch baseball games. Laury will be greatly missed by her husband of 65 years, John, children Patricia Owens, Arlo Thorsness (Kim), Kathryn Schultz (Mark), and Thomas Thorsness (Stephanie). She is survived by grandchildren John (Elise) and Patrick Schultz, Brandon, Andrea, and Tara Thorsness, Timothy and Tony Owens, and Bradley (Jessica) Thorsness and Tracey (Josh) Smale. Laury was blessed with two great granddaughters, Tessa Ketelhut and McKenzie Schultz and her loving niece, Jeanne Marie Schutte and nephew Bob Schutte (Janie) . She was preceded in death by her parents, Patrick and Rose Kasper Byrne, infant brother John Byrne, sisters Rosemary Byrne, Kathryn Schutte, and Patricia Regan, brothers-in-law Julius (Jay) Schutte and Martin Regan, and son-in-law, Willard Owens. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, January 18 at 1:00 PM (visitation 12-1 PM) at St. Francis de Sales Church in Spooner, WI with Father Ed Anderson officiating. Music will be provided by the St. Francis de Sales choir and the Thorsness family's dear friend, Sister Dominica Effertz. Internment to follow at the Northern Wisconsin Veteran's Cemetery. Pallbearers will be John and Patrick Schultz, Brandon Thorsness, Tim and Tony Owens, and Bradley Thorsness. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to special intentions, including St. Francis de Sales parish, Misericordia Community in Chicago, The , or a .
