Age 79 Of Hastings, MN A devout family man and ski business pioneer who has gone to rest after passing away on January 1, 2011, in the loving arms of his wife, Rosemary, at Afton Care St. Croix in Afton, MN. Also survived by sons, John (Monica) of Stillwater and David (Tracie) of Woodbury; daughter, Amy (John) Reents of Hastings; brother, Robert of Hastings; sisters, Rose Sieben of Hastings and Sr. Dolores Augustine of Monroe, NY; three grandchildren, and many other relatives, co-workers, and friends. Preceded in death byparents, Lawrence and Marie, and brothers, Louis and Gerald. Paul spent his formative years on a family farm with no electricity, just west of Hastings. He worked hard, became asuccessful farmer, and maintained a large-scale farm operation with his brother Robert for all of his working life. In 1963, Paul, his brother Robert, and colleague Thomas Furlong co-founded Afton Alps Ski Area, which would eventually introduce millions of people to the sport of skiing andprovide thousands of jobs to local residents. From modest beginnings Afton Alps has grown into a year-round operation with 18 chairlifts, 5 chalets, and an 18-hole golf course. In 1977, Paul decided to purchase and redevelop what is now Mount Kato Ski Area in Mankato; he followed that move with the 1980 purchase of what is now Titus Mountain Ski Area inMalone, NY. Paul served as President of the Midwest Ski Areas Association, served on the National Ski AreasAssociation Board of Directors, and received lifetime achievement awards from these associations for his contributions to the ski industry. Paul's family is deeply grateful to the caregivers of Afton Care Saint Croix, who for six years have provided compassionate care to him, accommodated the needs of the family, and will do one more act of service as his pallbearers.Visitation from 4-8 PM on Wednesday, January 5 in the main sanctuary of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Church, 2035 W. 15th Street, in Hastings.
