Lawrence RUSS Obituary

Age 91 of St. Paul Died a happy and holy death 2/13/2014 while in the loving care of his family. Survived by children, Michael Russ, Cynthia (Stephen) Smarjesse, and David (Joanne) Russ; seven grandchildren; one great grandchild; sisters Carol Ann and Pat; brother-in-law Anton Fausone; nieces; members of the Fourré family. Preceded in death by first wife Diana and infant son John; second wife Marie Fleming Fourré; parents Marion (Albert) Wuest and Raymond H. Russ; sister Lorraine Fausone. Larry was born 9/16/1922 in Minneapolis. With encouragement from key mentors, he conquered many challenges of his hardscrabble youth. After serving in the Marine Corps, he studied chiropractic and built a successful practice in Bemidji. Midlife, he changed careers and joined the University of St. Thomas faculty where he coached track and cross country. Until a recent cancer diagnosis, he lived a vigorous and proudly independent life. By teaching, mentoring, healing, volunteering, and delivering one-liners, Larry was dedicated to bettering the lives of others. He will be greatly missed by family, friends, the bullpen, and dance partners, but his legacy endures. Visitation Sunday, February 16, 4-7 pm at O'Halloran Murphy Funeral Home (575 S Snelling Ave St Paul MN, 651/698-0796). Mass of Christian Burial 10:30 am Monday, February 17, at Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Church (324 S. Prior St., St. Paul). Private interment. Memorials preferred to Our Lady of Peace Home, St Paul MN or University of St. Thomas Msgn. J Lavin Endowed Scholarship.

Doc was a super trainer, super teacher, genuinely nice, humble, smart guy, class act. Injuries always healed in record time under his treatments. Helped a lot of people. I'm sure he's got a reserved seat at the head table.

Only a few people in our lives stand out as truly exemplary, and Larry Russ was one of them. What a prince of a human being. Our paths crossed directly only a handful of times, but I always considered him to be a special kind of role model for me. Larry was humble, funny, kind, deeply spiritual, someone who made you a better person, someone who made you value each and every day as the gift that it is. The outpouring of love and affection and celebration directed toward Larry is not at all unexpected. He touched so many lives in positive and profound ways. We will miss him terribly, but now Larry is in God's loving arms for all eternity, and that is comforting. Your earthly voyage is over, my friend. Well done!

Doc was a true father figure for the hundreds of young men who went through his program over multiple decades. He was always there for us, no matter what we needed. Stern when needed. Sympathetic when needed. But always completely supportive of his men. The difference that he made in the lives of hundreds of us can't be measured. He was, and always will be, a class act. I'm truly blessed to have had Doc in my life.

Doc was a man of integrity, of deep faith in God, a caring, committed, coach, teacher, and friend. Always preaching making good choices for health, knowledge, and matters of faith. He joins our teammate Jack Zahr in heaven. May he rest in joy and peace, with perpetual light shining upon him.

Doc was like a father to me (and many others). A highly-skilled chiropractor of the mind, body and spirit. A head coach who was the heart and soul of the Distance Corps.
