We are so sorry to hear about the loss of a dear friend, Wally Johnson. We did not know of his death until receiving this e-mail; our best wishes to the family. We have fond memories of our association through House of Prayer Lutheran Church; when my brother, Roy Overland, joined the church, they became very good friends. Blessings

To Wally's family,
I feel fortunate to have had Wally as one of my coaches. He was tough on the outside but he had a tender heart. The old platitude "gruff on the outside with a heart of gold on the inside" applies perfectly to him. He helped to build some of that toughness in all his wrestlers by his "no excuses" approach to life. From a former U of M wrestler proud to be know as one of "Wally's guys".

Ted and Family: My deepest condolences. I first came in contact with Wally as a freshman football player. Over the years he became a mentor and a friend. This relationship grew as I became a graduate assistant in football and wrestling. He was always enthusiastic, positive and had high expectations of his athletes. Wally was always there for them. He is in our thoughts and prayers.

Wally was a fine person. I wrestled for him at the U. We kept contact during his team's visits to ASU. I always enjoyed a visit with him.

Wally was my freshman coach and I worked with him coaching the freshmen. He was always upbeat and positive in his coaching. He's one of the good guys who influenced my life.

To Wally's family:
It was a joy to wrestle for Wally (1967-1971) at the University of Minnesota. 40 years later I still tell his stories and use some of his unique expressions. He was a man of deep character and I will miss him.

I met Wally Johnson at my first football practise at Minn. in 1954. His smiling face and jolly attitude was a welcome bright spot in those early 2-a-day drills. He had also coached with my Dad under Fesler. I red-shirted the next year, so essentially had 2 yrs. as a freshman with Wally. He was a constant source of encouragement. After graduation he and Almeda were always at football events and would visit with Joan and I. I will miss his usual lyrical greeting, "Ensign Svendsen, How is it going?". I am traveling and very sorry that I can't attend the services. While in Denver I met with Jerry Shetler who also expressed his regrets.

Ted and Family,
I didn't meet your Dad, and that makes me sad, but I feel I know him through all your wonderful stories. And, how nice that he made John feel like part of your family while you were growing up. Sorry I can't be there, but I know John represents all the Werners as we express our deepest condolences for your loss.
Love,
Gail

I had the priveledge to get to know Wally and Merrilee at Friendship Village. Although Wally wasn't the most talkative at this stage in his life, I could tell that he was a wise, caring and wonderful man deeply loved by his family. My sympathies go out to all of you during this difficult time.

Our love and best wishes to Merilee, Dan, David and Teddy on the loss of your father and grandpa. We enjoyed so much the visits with him on Sunday mornings at Mt. Olivet. Of course, Chuck recalls his great contributions to the sport of wrestling--our tribute to a highly respected man of God.
