Genevieve Ruth CHAPMAN

Age 95 of Bloomington Passed away on Friday, March 10, 2017. A gifted student, active in the National Honor Society, Girls' Athletic Association, Girl Scouts, and library club, Genevieve graduated at the age of 16 from Central H.S. (St. Paul, MN). She graduated from Hamline/Asbury School of Nursing with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing and became a Registered Nurse. She worked at Asbury Hospital in the O.R., and enlisted in the Army Nurse Corps as 2nd Lieutenant (WWII). After training at Camp Carson, she was deployed with the 77th Field Hospital to Tavistock, England (115th Station Hospital), then to Neufchatel, France, before being sent to St. Valery-en-Caux, Camp Lucky Strike (89th Division), a RAMP Camp (Recovered Allied Military Personnel) treating the newly released allied prisioners of war, many suffering from malnutrition. After the German surrender, her unit was sent to Germany, first to Kassel and then Nuremberg (315th General Hospital). She attended the Nuremberg Trials when Goring and other Nazi criminals were on trial. Military Decorations and Citations: EAME Theatre Ribbon, two Overseas Service Bars, and the Victory Medal. She was promoted to 1st Lieutenant and honorably discharged. The day she returned home, she met her future husband, Jack Chapman (Marine Night Fighter in the Pacific, WWII), a Ham radio friend of her brother, Merton. She worked at the Veterans Hospital, and later at 3M Company as a Industrial Nurse. While raising children, she maintained her R.N. licsense, worked part-time at St. Joseph's Hospital (St. Paul) and after receiving her Public Health Nurse Certification, conducted Early Childhood Screenings, and worked as a Substitute School Nurse (Bloomington). During the Cuban Refugee Crisis, she served as a nurse at Ft. McCoy, WI. For 30+ years she was a member of "Friday Friends", a group which regularly visits Presbyterian Homes. After Genevieve and Jack retired, they worked as volunteers at Pax Christi Catholic Church for 25 yrs and at Bridging, an organization providing household goods to the needy, for 20+ yrs. Preceded in death by her husband, Jack, her parents, Albert and Ruth Christgau, brothers Merton and Doug, sister-in-law, Esther Christgau, and brothers-in-law, Richard Chapman and Bruce Rice. Genevieve is survived by her sister, Ilene Rice, her sister-in-law, Grace Chapman, 7 children, 16 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren: Jane Gilbert-Howard (husband: Ken Howard; children: Peder Gilbert (son: Thaden), Bryan Gilbert (wife Tracy; children: Emma, Clara, Gunnar, Ruby), Jon Gilbert (wife: Brooke; son: Aceson), Angela Fritz (husband Jimmy; children: James, Madeline) and Daniel Gilbert (wife: Linsey; children: Jazlyn, Cruz), Susan Bailey (children: Sean (wife: Sarah; son, spence) and Brian (wife Mackenzie, daughterr: Adelie), Daniel Chapmen (wife: Louaynne; children: Alan (wife: Kelly; sons: Gabriel, Jacob), Eric (wife: Emily) and Mark (husband: Hermes), Ilene Warneke (husband: Gregory; children, Barbara, Melissa), David Chapman (wife: Toyzoyaha; his children: Russell, Kyra and their mother, Melissa Chapman), Judith Jeon-Chapman (husband: Olympio; children: Cameron, Jacqueline), Carol Bernacchia (husband: Bruce).
