Terri, many years have passed since we were in touch with you. We have thought of you often over the years. Were very sorry to hear of the passing of your mother and now your dear father. Fond memories of both of them visiting our home in Williamsburg while you were in college. Tom and I will continue to keep you in our thoughts and prayers. Thank You Herb for all the wonderful years you explained to me what the Twins were doing on the field, while I was at work, in the boat fishing, or painting the house. Your voice was comforting me most of my life, and will be with me for the rest of it. Touch 'em all buddy!

I grew up on a farm in North Dakota which meant I spent many hours and days out in the field. One great joy I had during those days was listening to the Twins on the radio through the voice of Herb. He was able to make me feel like I was at the game. I will always love listening to the Twins on the radio and that is a tribute to Herb. I know his family will miss him the most but know also that their is another family that will miss him also, all of us that loved to listen to him broadcast Twins baseball all summer long.
God Bless and may God's peace be with you during this time of loss.

A common theme echos in these entries for the one and only Herb Carneal...
"listened to the Twins games out at the lake". "Grew up listening in the 60's & 70's to the Twins broadcasts at the cabin" etc, etc.
I too, remember those wonderful memories. Whatever the time of day, if the game was on, the radio was on in the cabin, or on the "transistor" radio carried around while enjoying the wonderfully unique lifestyle of "Minnesota at the lake"....
I remember the random, babbling banter of Halsey Hall, Herb's partner, and his incessant "hua hua haaa" chortle after he was amused by something (he said or saw). And, I remember Herb's intelligent, insightful, "straight man" comments to balance 'ol Halsey.
Herb's passing brought these great memories of my youth vididly to the current.... along with a tear in my eye...

As a kid in the late 60's & 70's I spent my summers in the Brainerd area where there was only one TV channel and almost nothing on. Whether I was spending a nice day outside, or stuck inside on a rainy day a lot of my memories of that time have an old Motorola transistor radio playing in the background and Herb's voice calling a Twins game. He'll always be the voice of the Twins to me.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the Carneal family. I had the chance to meet Herb and wanted to pass on this story as another example of what a class individual he was.
I was fortunate enough to be a participant in the Twin's Fantasy Camp in 1995. it was a fantastic week, having the chance to meet and spend time with many Twin's greats. All week we play against the other fantasy campers and then on Saturday we play against the Pro's.
The game was videotaped and each camper got a tape of the game as a souvenir. The year I played, Herb did the Play by play for the game.
Of course it was a huge thrill that someone of Herb's stature would do the play by play of us camper's playing the Twin's legends.
It was wonderful to meet and talk with such an unassuming and warm gentleman like Herb, but what really made the week special was the extra effort Herb put into covering our game.
A couple of days before the game, I received a note (all of the campers did) from Herb asking me to provide some background info. he might be able to us in the game on Saturday. I was very touched and impressed that he would go to these lengths to give us campers a first class experience.
Sincerely,
Paul Jackson

We would be on a lake and wondering if 'cco was available to us, we would just move the radio dial and if we heard Herb's voice we knew it was 'cco! The fishing got better listening to him tell us the Twins were winning! It never failed to excite the whole crew, even the fish came closer!

Herb, you were the consumate professional. There has not been, nor will there ever be another broadcast booth with the likes of Herb Carneal, Halsey Hall, and Ray Scott. Despite the Twins ups and downs during the 70's and 80's, you were always a constant for the organization. You never had a 'down' season. Rest in peace with your loving wife. My sincere best wishes to your daughter and her family.

The passing of Herb Carneal is a loss for every Twins fan and everyone that has been a fan of Twins baseball for the last 45 years. 45 years...think about that. I feel so fortunate that I have been able to enjoy Herb's contributions to all the Twins fans over the years. I know how others feel the same way I do that hearing his voice triggered so many memories.
I cried today. I cried because I feel like I lost a friend. I bet there are many many Twins fans who feel the same way. It takes a special talent and a special person to connect with so many fans on that level. Herb will surely be missed.
The other members of the Twins broadcast team do a fine job. I would say that although they each bring their own unique talents to their job, John Gordon, Dan Gladden, and Jack Morris are all better at it having worked with Herb. It is not a slight on their fine talents at all to say that it will not be the same knowing I never get to hear Herb broadcast another game.
Thanks for the memories Herb.
Rest in peace

Carneal family, our thoughts and prayers are with you. We knew Herb just thru his public voice. He was true and honest. I've told my young kids to count among their blessings that they got to "see" Twins baseball in their heads by listening to the splendid Herb Carneal. Herb's career of "game calling" seems analygous to the long, steady narrative that is the game of baseball itself. It is rich and valued because of how it has so much been. For me, since about 1972, Thanks Herb. To his family/friends, God Bless.

Herb was the best! Growing up in a small town in Southwest Minnesota Luverne to be specific I have fond memories of listening to him especially the West coast games that started late when I was supposed to be asleep with my trusty transistor radio under my pillow! I have lived in Texas for half my life now but those memories of Herb and Ray Christianson on the Gophers are some of the best memories of my life! Herb was a class act and a mentor and memory that will always be with me! Al Shaver is another one for the old North Stars and I am lucky enough to be able to listen to his student here in Dallas with the Stars Ralph Strangis. I know a lot of people in Minnesota didn't like the Stars move to Dallas but I think they moved for me sometimes (just kidding). But I am a huge Twins fan forever!Same with the Vikings you really know where your true roots are! God Bless Herb he was an outstanding man!

I know that Herb Carneal wore several hats throughout his lifetime, like the hat of a husband, father, and grandfather, among several others, but the hat I will always picture him wearing is that of being a wonderful baseball announcer. While I never met Herb in person, I felt like he was a true friend anyway from all those years of listening to his vivid play by play descriptions of Twins games. To me, he was as refreshingly representative of Minnesota summertimes as gently lapping lakes or the sun shining down surrounded by a beautiful blue sky and a nice breeze. You've touched us all, Herb. Thank you.

I have been listening to Herb Carneal as the voice of the Twins since the 1960's. I will really miss one of the true great announcers in the game! He did it with true class and his own Poetic style. He was one of the last ties to my youth. Thanks for the memories Herb!

It was because of Herb that I got into radio when I grew up. I used to sneak a transistor under my pillow in the 60's, before I was even 10 years old, to listen to the West Coast games, just to hear Herb and my beloved Twins. I had the good fortune to meet Mr. Carneal in 1996, a moment I'll always treasure. Herb became like a friend to all Twins fans. From one of your millions of friends, I say: rest well, Herb, and thank you for everything.

My brothers and I spent most of our childhood in Bay City, MI. Our dad raised us to be loyal Twins fans (in the middle of Detroit Tiger territory). After dark, we could always pick up a faint WCCO signal or the signal from the Des Moines, IA affiliate that carried the games. Unlike nowadays, the Twins were rarely on TV unless they played the Tigers - radio was our only way to stay up on the Twins. Herb was the voice of the Twins then and, in my mind will always be. Like Ernie Harwell (who we also grew up listening to and admired), Herb did a great job of bringing the game to us in his humble, understated manner. He will be missed!

I have to echo what others have said. I grew up listening to the twins on my transistor radio. I beagn listening to Herb when I was 10 years old and now I'm 55. When I think of all the great twins highlights over the years, I think of Herb Carneal. He was a trusted friend and someone I will miss. Thanks Herb, for everything..

April 5, 2007
This is on behalf of my dad, Roman Harmening, who got much enjoyment from listening to Herb call the Twins while tinkering in the basement or driving the tractor. In fact, if he chose to watch on TV he would often turn down the volume and flip on the radio at the preference of hearing Herb’s familiar voice. My dad passed away 6 months ago but if he were here today he would point to the void Herb has left certainly for his generation and indeed for all of us. Especially as the simplicity and history of radio broadcasting seems to be giving way to a world that needs increasing and sometimes troubling levels of entertainment. God’s blessings to the Carneal family during this time of sorrow and celebration of a wonderful man who touched many lives by bringing the Twins and the national pastime into our homes in such an honorable and distinctive way.

I grew up listening to Herb on WCCO and at the Twins game's my dad would take us to. I didn’t’ really like baseball…. I think I just tagged along for the malted milk ice cream cups and the way Herb would say “Kiiiirrrrrbbbbbyyy Puckett!” To this day, I would take one step into my parent’s house, and knew instantly that my dad was watching a Twins game. I would hear Herb’s voice coming out of every radio and TV set in the house! My dad couldn’t miss one second of those games. It will not be the same walking into my parent's house this summer. I used to get so annoyed that my dad would be more interested in Herb's "play by play's" then how my day was….. I can truly say that I will miss that “voice”.…. The next time I’m eating my malted milk cup, I’ll think of you Herb….May g-d bless you. You’ve given many people some great memories!

Herb brought the Twins to us everywhere, on the fishing boat, in the truck on the way to the lake, working in the yard and on the porch. Even the Met when people still brought there radios to the game. Each trip home for a visit I'd listen to a couple innings with Herb. He did it with grace and a comforting voice. Miss you already, Herb and thank you for those great memories.

Herb Carneal, a true ambassador of Baseball, won the hearts of all Minnesotans and baseball fans, all over. Listening to the broadcast, in the car, in the tractor, fishing, wherever....the game was right there with you. They'll never be another, who did it so well. But, then again, Herb was the true fan, and the Twins #1 fan. To the Family, our thoughts and prayers are with you and yours during this sad time, and in the days ahead. God Bless your family, and God Bless, Herb.

How well I remember those summer days out on the fishing boat at Lake Minnetonka with my Dad, listening to the Twins. The days of Killer, Rodney, Mudcat, Tony-O, Camilo, Allison and so many more, with such sweet play by play from Herb. Sometimes the Twins' manager, Sam Mele, would make a pitching change that would backfire, and my Dad would get so furious. He would start to write a letter to Herb and Halsey to vent his frustration. He never sent the letters, of course, but it was something he just needed to do! Now, if Gardy makes a bad call, maybe my Dad can hand-deliver the letter to Herb.
A couple years ago, my son got Herb's autograph and Herb proudly showed him his World Series ring. Summers and baseball just won't be the same without that soothing voice from the broadcast booth. My thanks to Herb's family for sharing him with us from April to October for 45 years.

Mr. Carneal, thank you for so many wonderful years of bringing Twins action to us where ever we were. On the lake, in our cars, at barbeques and picnics, or event secretly at work or school. You described for us all those wonderful Twins moments that will fill our memories. You were a true professional and Minnesota and the Twins' family has endured another sad passing.
I hope that Kirby Puckett and Bob Casey welcomed you into heaven and that together maybe the three of you can work some magic from up there and help bring home another championship for the Twins this year.
My condolences to the family and friends of Herb Carneal. While we mourn with you his passing, we fondly remember his legacy and know that great voice of the Minnesota Twins will live in the hearts of each of us forever!

To the family of Herb Carneal:
Deepest sympathies and condolences to you on a loss that I am sure you know is felt by countless friends around the region.
I, like many others, grew up listening to Herb's easy manner, engaging personality and uncompromising professionalism. I had the good fortune to become a broadcaster in the Northern League for a time and my first thought upon taking my job was that I was in the same profession as a man I grew up admiring greatly.
We can never hope to replace such a fine practitioner of the broadcast art. My thoughts and prayers are with you, his family, in your time of loss.

I have goosebumps reading all these entries about one of our true Minnesota legends. Even though he's not with us any more, just saying the name "Herb Carneal" brings the sound of his voice right here. I know every Twins fan that listened to the games on the radio (is there any other way to experience a Twins game?)can hear him right now as well. Thanks Herb! And by all means, hug Kirby for us.

A class individual. You hear this saying tossed around but when speaking of Herb, it's not just lip service. This was a man that cared about the team, the fans, and the people of Minnesota. A genuine treasure to listen to on mid summers nights has been lost and all Twins fans have lost something as well. My heartfelt sorrow goes out to the Carneal family and may best wishes be with you through this time.

Dear Carneal Family: I'm so thankful to be a 41 year old Twins fan, having been blessed with hearing Herb's voice and passion for the game of baseball my entire life! He is a big reason why I love baseball so much, and have so many wonderful radio memories. I will always admire his dedication and humility. When I was away to college in the mid 80's, I told my friends I sure missed hearing Herb's voice, and it was great to be home for the summer and tune in to WCCO. As a past president of the Minnesota Broadcasters Association it was my honor to meet and sit with Herb Carneal prior to a game in the early 70's. Not only was he the perfect play by play announcer but also the perfect gentleman. Our radio station in Bemidji, of which I was the Vice President, received numerous phone calls from listeners praising Herb's announcing and baseball knowledge. There will be great memories of Herb behind the mike. And who can ever forget his wonderful comments about Halsey Hall eating green onions in the radio booth just prior to the start of a game. We will all miss you Herb, you were one of the best radio broadcasters.

Thank you for all the enthusiasm you had for the Twins. The sound of your voice on the radio is unmistakable and it signifies Minnesota Twins baseball.

Thanks for all the memories. I grew up in central MN listening to the Twins on the radio. My favorite Twin was Harmon Killebrew a class act just like Herb. Halsey Hall was also fun to listen to on the radio! Thanks again, you will be truely missed!

We will miss you Herb. You have been an inspiration to many of us as well as a purveyor of many baseball memories.

To the Carneal family, Please accept this old fan's deepest condolences. And thank you for sharing your wonderful father with us for so many years. Herb had the rare gift of letting one feel that they were at the park while our collective imaginations visualized the events. News of his death saddened me greatly. Our prayers are with you all.
