Passed away July 24, 2014 Surrounded by loved ones Age 52, of Woodbury. Survived by loving wife, Holly of 21 years; children, Benjamin (21), Katelyn (19) and David (14); mother, Margaret; siblings, Michael (Jeannie), Maureen (Bruce) Hatteberg, Mark, Margaret (Tom) Thron, Michelle (Tom) Ray, Maria and Mary Kollander; 17 nieces and nephews and 12 great-nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by father, William. Matthew served 26 years for the Army National Guard, and retired in 2011 as a Lieutenant Colonel. He spent 8 years as a pilot for Mesaba Airlines and 15 years as a pilot at Northwest/Delta Airlines. He loved riding his motorcycles, working on his vintage cars, spending time with his family and generally loving life. We will miss his spirit that he generously shared with us here on earth. We know he has moved on to a far better place. Special thanks to the staff at U of M BMT Clinic and Dr. Bachanova for their loving care. Memorials are preferred to Leukemia Lymphoma Society. My Deepest Sympathy to the Van Ort Family. Growing up in the neighborhood we did there were so many who have gone before their time. Just know he's in God's hands now and the suffering has ended. May you find solace in that.And he was surely greeted by Dad. Love to you and your Family.

I first knew Matt from the MN.Army National Guard,many years ago. Although our job assignments changed he never forgot me and I will never forget him! He will be truly missed. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and extended friends.

I also knew Matt from the guard. Flew OH-58s with him. What a great guy and always a positive presence. Just a wonderful person and gone too soon. My thoughts are with his family. I am so sorry for your staggering loss.
