Bernhard Warren "Barney" ENGLUND Obituary
Age 88 Born April 16, 1925 in Hovland, MN Died at home surrounded by his loving family on September 17, 2013, in Roseville, Minnesota. Many interesting observations could be made about Barney - he was born in a log cabin; he beached his amphibious landing vehicle in the Philippines a stone's throw from MacArthur; with his partners he built a thriving business that funded his children's education, his many travels, his generosity, the beautiful places he called home and a string of Lincoln Town Cars. Barney was a diligent worker and took pleasure in providing a good life for his family. While clearly successful, he was not an ambitious man, but would find satisfaction in whatever work was set before him and then discover that he was more prosperous than he had ever imagined. He was, therefore, a contented man. It would make a good Bible story. He was proud of his boys and their families, rejoicing in their successes, and mourning their losses. He loved and served his faith communities, but did not concern himself with the particulars of theology or the brand name, he simply found that worshipping together with friends centered his spirit and afforded him the opportunity to reflect on his many blessings. But for a proper understanding of Barney, all these facts would be neither here nor there if you didn't know about Gladys - for Barney's was essentially a shared life. Never were partners better suited to each other, and it was their tender togetherness that formed the foundation of his earthly existence, bringing joy to themselves, their family, their friends and their communities. He treasured his friends, and even the last days of his life found him reaching out with phone calls to the quickly thinning ranks of the old gang of his youth. He was a delight and a gift to us these 88 years. Barney was preceded in death by his parents, Alexander and Blanche (Wilson) Englund; brother, Milton; sister, Margaret; and granddaughters, Maria and April. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Gladys; sister, Elizabeth Axmark; sons, William (Lori Jo), Paul (honorary daughter-in-law, Kathleen Bartholomay), Joseph (Mary); grandchildren, Nina, Kendall, Isak, Jacqueline and Melissa; great-granddaughter, Emmalina; and many loving nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, September 28, 2013, 12 Noon with visitation one hour prior at First Baptist Church, 499 N. Wacouta Street, St. Paul. In lieu of flowers, consider a gift in Barney's memory to a place close to your heart. There would be no better or more fitting way to honor this generous man.
