Cheryl M. HAWLEY Obituary
Age 64, of Edina, died Dec. 28 during treatment for acute myeloid leukemia. A social worker with the St. Paul Public Housing Agency, she provided support services for thousands of elderly and handicapped residents of the city's public hi-rise apartments during a 32-year career with the agency. A recent accomplishment was the establishment of Metro State University's student nurse clinics in agency hi-rises that prompted Metro State to give its 2012 "Community Partner of the Year" award to PHA. Cheryl also ran her own floral design business, Silk 'n' Vine Originals, specializing in custom-made arrangements that were sold in various venues, including the gift shop at the University of Minnesota Landscape Aroboretum. Her artificial orchid arrangements, sold during the arboretum's annual orchid show, were so realistic that some customers asked how often they needed to be watered. Cheryl was born and reared in Aurora, Ill., the eldest daughter of Harold and Eileen Mayer. She graduated from the University of Dubuque in 1970 and then moved to Worthington, Minn., where she was a social worker at a unique residential school for neuro-orthopedically handicapped children. She later worked for the Dakota County Developmental Learning Center before joining the public housing agency in 1980. She is survived by her husband of 37 years, David of Edina, son Daniel of Brainerd, sister Rita (Klaus) Geineder of Glen Burnie, MD, and father, Harold, of Minneapolis. She was preceded in death by her mother. Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Friday at the Cremation Society of Minnesota, 7110 France Ave. S., Edina. Visitation from 5-7 p.m. Thursday at the same location. Interment will be private.
