Obituary Condolences

(Dolly) Age 98 Of Aventura, Florida, formerly of Key Biscayne, Fl., Pittsburgh, Pa., Richmond, Va., Milwaukee, Wi. and New York, N. Y., passed away peacefully on June 18, 2011. Born July 11, 1912, in St. Paul, Minnesota, to Herman Eugene and Ebba Lund Samuelson, both descendants of the early Swedish settlers in the state of Minnesota. Dorothy graduated from Central High School in St. Paul. She earned a B.S. in Home Economics Education at the University of Minnesota and then taught high school in Eyota, Minnesota. She later received an M. S. degree in retailing from New York University's Graduate School of Business. She was Training Supervisor at the Dayton Company in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the region's largest major department store. In 1942 she was commissioned an officer in the WAVES, U. S. Navy. During WWII she was named Senior Uniform Officer at the WAVES training station at the Fordham campus of Hunter College in New York City. By the end of the war she had risen to Lt. Senior Grade. Dorothy resumed her career as Training Director for the Associated Merchandising Corporation, the membership-owned retail research and marketing group that included department stores such as Filenes, Bloomingdales and Bullocks. In 1969. after many years devoted to family, she enrolled at Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pa. to study library arts and sciences. She was passionate about Sweden, eagerly devoting hundreds of research hours in American and European libraries, museums and government archives to tracing the immigrations of her forefathers. Once an active bowler, Dorothy excelled at crossword puzzles and was an avid reader with a special interest in history and a good whodunit. She was a devoted senior Friend of the Goldstein Museum of Design and a life member of the Alumni Association at the University of Minnesota. Dorothy will be remembered for the dignified, unassuming manner in which she loved and effected people's lives. Survivors include her husband of 67 years, Herbert Alan Leeds, sons Alan M. and Eric J., daughter-in-law Gwendolyn Gwyn-Leeds, grandson Tristan Alan Leeds, sister Marjorie Ann Larson, nephews Kenneth Larson and Gary Larson, nieces Ann Watts, Marcia Falk, Nancy Griepentrog, Suzie Cox and numerous cousins. She was pre-deceased by brother Dr. Robert Eugene Samuelson. A memorial service will be held at Vi at Aventura, in Aventura, Florida, on Thursday, June 23, 2011, at 2:15 P.M.
