My thoughts and prayers are with the Baughman family at this difficult time. As a Franklin teacher I learned many things under the guidance of our principal. But the two most important lessons I learned from Harold are, "Do what's right for the kids" and "Take care of your family first."

Helen, Paul and Pam,
Life will never be the same without Harold around, but we know that. He touched so many lives and that includes ours. It seems like yesterday that we shared our lives on Ottawa Avenue. But time moves on whether we are ready or not. We pray for comfort in the memories we all have of Harold and thank God that he was a part of our lives too.

Helen, Paul and Pam,

I can honestly say there are very few men that have had a positive impact on me and Harold was one. That gruff exterior was but a thin shell, the interior was warm and caring. I loved stopping, chatting and visiting with him as I walked down the alley or in his workshop both as a young man and later with my own children. Harold was always ready to impart a bit of his own brand of german wisdom but always taking the time to talk with me. I thought of him frequently over the past few years, thinking of riding down to Cannon Falls but didn't. I wish I had. My heartfelt condolences to you. Be proud knowing that he impacted lots of lives and that many will miss him including me. I wish I was in town to say good bye to my old friend but memories of Harold will always be with me.

I was scared to death of Mr. Baughman as the Franklin Elementary principal. The school was in a tough neighborhood and required a strong authority figure.

The few times I was in Mr. Baughman's office, I remember him as being kind, warm, gentle, but firm. I'll always remember looking up to him and he was always smiling.

My deepest sympathies to his surviving family, but know that the legacy lives on.

Harold was my principal at Franklin School. What a wonderful and amazing principal he was! I was so fortunate to teach at Franklin under his leadership and learn from him. With Harold it was always about the children we taught. While you could disagree with him, as a teacher, you always knew he would be fair and make the best decision for kids. He had a wonderful sense of humor and a killer smile.

Please accept my sincere sympathy on the loss of your wonderful husband, father and grandfather.

Harold means "army ruler" and the name is fitting for a principal working with teachers in the St. Paul Schools. Harold was a gifted leader who challenged us to learn new skills, motivated us to do more than we ever thought possible and supported us daily in our work with children. His legendary sense of humor brightened many a difficult day. I must admit, though, I could have clobbered him when he came into my room growling like a bear, claws outstretched. Students were either running around screaming or hiding under tables as he left saying, "Have a nice day!" Harold may be gone but he will not be forgotten.

Harold will long be remembered by both his staff at Franklin School and the students and parents in the Franklin community. He was always out in the halls and popping into classrooms, greeting all students by name. Many times each week, he walked out into the Mount Airy neighborhood where he greeted parents and talked to them knowingly about their children. Harold was gruff in manner; the children knew that they could not "mess" with him. But they loved him. When he walked in my room, his legs were covered with first graders hanging onto him and demanding his attention! One of my little students, Raymond, had a particular attachment to "Mr. Bossman." Raymond was very thin and in need of TLC. Harold set up a plan where the lunch ladies provided a snack for Raymond at 10:00 each morning--Raymond needed food and Harold wanted to put some meat on his bones. Raymond stopped every morning on his way into school to talk to Harold and catch him up on his life. One morning Raymond had his fists clenched behind his back. "Mr. Bossman," he said, "Close your eyes and put out your hand." Harold did as instructed, and Raymond proudly deposited a dirt covered worm in Harold's hand for his next fishing trip!
Harold provided fun and support for all of us. He encouraged me in both my teaching of children and to become a teacher of other teachers. I owe him much.

Mr. Baughman was my principal at Franklin Elementary back in the 70s. We recently has our 25 year class reunion and his name was brought up by a classmate. Funny the things you reminisce about after so long. I, too, remember writing sentences in his office: "My face turns red when I cry." I can't recall the preceding episode, but I do remember the lines!

I have to address this fine man as Mr. Baughman, as I learned the hard way. While in school @ Franklin Elementary (1975-1981) I called him 'Harold' one day and he taught me a valuable lesson of addressing my elders. I was able to sit in his office and write 100 times that "My principal's name is Mr. Baughman, not Harold." His lesson has always stuck with me, as he was a fair man and a great leader. He is one of my inspirations that lead me to become a Saint Paul Public School Teacher. Thank you Mr. Baughman for caring about your student and staff body, and for taking the time to teach others.

Mr. Baughman was one of those educators that you always remember fondly. He had a great impact on those students he encountered. I remember him as principal of Nokomis Elementary-he was always kind and really cared about the kids! I remember the time I hurt my ankle and he drove me home because my mother didn't have the car to come get me! My condolences to the family-he was a very special man.

Dear Harold....gone but never to be forgotten. As cousins growing up, we lived in different states so couldn't visit very often. But the time in your home in Minneapolis and in Florida will always be remembered. We loved that outstanding sense of humor and if you were here, I would be giving you a bad time about all these wonderful compliments the school children and their parents are saying about you. You deserve every one and you were an "outstanding cousin" - very much missed. Carol (Jones) Garberg

I also was fortunate to have Harold as a 5th and 6th grade teacher at Garfield Elementary on the West Side of St. Paul Harold and Helen also lived across from my brother and his wife. He was kind enough to attend my brother's funeral a few years ago. Not to mention I was briefly related to him through marriage. My condolences to the family. He will be dearly missed.

When Farnsworth reopened in 1990, I was in my second year of teaching. Harold was a wonderful principal and mentor for me. He taught me so many things about how to effectively manage a classroom. I loved how he would walk around the neighborhood during his lunch break and introduce himself to the neighbors. I'll never forget his sharp pencil award, how we could win a 1 and 1/2 hour lunch if we came to the staff meetings on time (and our name was drawn), and his great sense of humor. He has positively impacted many lives. He will be missed!

I was fortunate enough to attend Franklin's very first BRAVO class as a 3rd grader. I'll never forget how the bus never came that first day of school. My mom called and complained (quite vocally!) and Mr. Baughman happily came out and picked me and a few other kids up in his personal car. A simple enough story, but a great example of the kindness and leadership Mr. B. possessed and displayed from day 1. I've never forgotten him or Franklin ES. A great man who will be missed by many.

I am a former student from Franklin.Everyones entries are extremely accurate. Mr Baughman is someone all teachers and principals could look up to. The Tachenys comments could not be written any better. He was a good man and I am sorry for your family's loss.

Pam & Paul: You have my deepest sympathy. Don't know if you remember, but we use to live across the street from you on Congress when we were little kids. I remember trick and treating at your house and your dad would always make us do a trick. He was a very special man. You are in our prayers! The Capiz family.

Mr. Baughman was given a tough last assignment, to be the principal of the newly reopened Farnsworth School. The children who came that first year were mostly those who couldn't get into the school of their choice. Even teachers were reassigned, and I don't think anyone was too happy to be there. We live in the Farnsworth neighborhood and had a kindergarten child ready to enter the second year the school was open. I was nervous about sending him, but it turned out to be a great choice for Andrew and his younger brother, Paul. Mr. Baughman's competent, friendly ways earned everyone's respect and he got the school going in a positive direction. We are grateful. It is good to celebrate a life that made a difference. Our sympathy to the family in your loss.

I am sorry to hear of Mr. Baughman's passing. He was my principal at Deane Elementary and then at Franklin. I have always wondered over the years how he was doing. He left quite a mark on my elementary education, and impacted the rest of my life. In kindergarten he used to carry me up to the library to get a book to take home. He always treated me special and helped me feel less like a misfit! It sounds like he went out of his way for others as well. I will always have fond memories of him. I hope Mr. Baughman's family finds comfort knowing so many people were so positively impacted by him. RIP Mr. Baughman!

All four of our children attended Franklin Music Magnet school which was led then by Mr. Baughman, the finest Principal we ever encountered and the one that made the most impact and earned the most respect from all of our children.... now ages 44 thru 37.
Harold Baughman led with firm discipline but earned much respect from the students as well as the parents. He could be their friend but at the same time they knew their boundries. It was always a joy to go to the school for concerts, conferences etc. and know that when you bumped into Mr. Baughman he would extend his hospitality and always share small talk. Gone but never forgotten. R.I.P.

I would like to echo the sentiments of Mary Tacheny. I attended Franklin Music Magnet from 1976 to 1979 (4th through 6th grades) and liked Mr. Baughman very much. I use the principles I learned from him to guide my life in many ways to this very day. He was very much a positive part of my life, and I will remember him always.
