Philip GRANT Obituary

Age 85, of St. Paul Passed away Sunday, New Year's Day, 2017 at Our Lady of Peace Home in St. Paul. Survived by daughters Deborah J. Grant (Thomas P. Carney) and Kathryn A. Grant (Scott G. Lybyer) and brother John T. Grant (San Rafael, CA) and many nieces and nephews. Also survived by spouse Jean M. Grant (nee Burtis). Phil was born October 9, 1931 in St. Paul, the youngest son of Richard and Sara Grant He grew up with brothers James, Richard, John and sister Jane Grant (Simmer) and a host of horses, dogs, cats and chickens. He loved people, animals and books and was curious and interested in everything life offered. He attended Nativity grade school, St. Thomas Academy and the College of St. Thomas. He served in the U.S. Navy with the VP-28 Hawaiian Warrior Squadron and enjoyed many reunions with his shipmates in San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, Pensacola, St. Augustine and New Orleans (2015). Phil worked for General Motors in Los Angeles, CA during the 1960's and returned to Minnesota with his family continuing his automotive and transportation career by volunteering with the Minneapolis VAMC Escort Service. His charm and wit and wisdom will remain in our hearts and memories forever. Euntes ergo docete omnes gentes is one of the Latin phrases he loved. It is carved in stone above the Cathedral of his beloved St. Paul. Go therefore and teach all nations. Phil has donated his body to the University of Minnesota Medical School Anatomy Bequest Program. A celebration of his life will be held on May 3, 2017 on the Feast of St. Philip and he will be interred at Fort Snelling National Cemetery at that time. Memorials may be made to OLP or Minneapolis VAMC.
