Richard Howard (Dick) GEHLSEN Obituary
Dad, Grandpa, Great Grandpa Age94, passed away March 4, 2014, at his daughter's home in Birmingham, Alabama. Richard was born October 19, 1919 to Herman and Alta (Klinge) Gehlsen in Clinton, Iowa. The family moved to St Paul MN in 1931. He served in the CCC at Camp 711 near Ely, MN, which awakened his love for the northern part of the state and camping. Richard married Lorraine Bzoskie in St Paul on April 25, 1942. He enlisted in the Army Air Corpsand served in England with the 784th Bomb Squadron as a draftsman making maps for Allied bombing runs. At the close of the war he began a long career as an architect with Ellerbe Co. of St Paul, designing mainly hospitals and medical schools throughout the US and Canada. Dick and Lorraine lived in White Bear Lake for 55 years, and were founding members of St Pius X Catholic Church. He was a longtime member of the Bald Eagle Sportsmens' Club. His many interests include hunting, fishing, boating, gardening, music, chess, reading and furniture refinishing. Dick is survived by his children: Judith (David) Stickney, Embarrass MN; Jane Haight, Birmingham AL; Gerald (Christine), Andover MN; John (Kathleen), Ramsey MN; 9 grandchildren; 11 greatgrandchildren; his sister Norma Carneal, Newcastle WA; sister-in-law AnneMarieGehlsen, Marcellus NY; numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by son Jay (2000) and wife Lorraine (2011), his parents, 2 brothers and 2 sisters. Funeral services will be 11am Saturday, March 15, 2104 at St Pius X Catholic Church in White Bear Lake with visitation 1 hour before the service. Burial will be at St Mary's Cemetery, White Bear Lake.
