Teresita Martinez VERGNE

Obituary Condolences

Died on July 25th, 2013 At the age of 57 succumbing to an infection of the central nervous system after a fall, very likely caused by a complication of Parkinson's disease. Teresita was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico. She earned her PhD at the University of Texas at Austin and became a productive and distinguished scholar of Caribbean history, teaching Caribbean and Latin American history for twenty years at Macalester College in Saint Paul, Minnesota; the University of Puerto Rico in Río Piedras; and Colgate University in Hamilton, New York. She left academia to work in Washington, D.C., where she labored to increase access of youth to higher education, among other causes. She is remembered as a person of tremendous spirit, strength and courage. She was a capable colleague and a dear and loving friend with an infectious laugh. She is survived by her daughter Irene, sister and brother-in-law Mari and Tom, nephew Noel, and countless friends and relatives in many parts of the world. There will be a celebration of Teresita's life on Sunday, October 27th at Macalester College in the Weyerhaeuser Memorial Chapel at 1:00 pm, with a reception following in the Weyerhaeuser Boardroom and Lounge at 2:00 pm. Gifts in her memory may be made to the Macalester College Teresita Martínez Vergne Memorial Fund, which will benefit undergraduate student scholars.
