1934 - 2014 | Obituary Condolences
Age 80, of Shoreview, MN Servant of the Lord Jesus Christ Garvin went to be with the Lord on June 11, 2014. Garvin was born May 30, 1934 in a farm house in Webb, Oklahoma to Peter and Jessie McGettrick. The family moved to Cortez, Colorado in 1937. Garvin was the fifth of seven children. Garvin graduated from Redlands University, Redlands, CA in 1956. He was commissioned in the U.S. Navy and became a navigator on P-2V Neptune anti-submarine aircraft, serving our country for four years. In 1961, while studying voice and music literature at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY he met Lynne Newcombe. They were married after completing Master of Music degrees in 1962. They moved to St. Paul in 1963 where Garvin taught music at Bethel College and attended Bethel Theological Seminary. Garvin graduated with a Master of Divinity degree in 1968, and began his ministry at Alcester Baptist Church, Alcester, SD. Garvin became a Naval Reserve Chaplain in 1972. His service included aircraft carrier and naval hospital assignments. He retired with the rank of Commander, completing 20 years of military service. Garvin graduated from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, TX in 1974 with a Doctor of Ministry degree in theology. Garvin pastored three other Baptist General Conference churches: Mount Pleasant Baptist in Vancouver, BC (1973-1978); Central Baptist in St. Paul, MN (1978-1981); and Grace Baptist in Tracy, CA (1981-1991). He served each congregation with dedication and devotion. After Garvin and Lynne retired they returned to Shoreview. They were active members of Central Baptist, where they sang in the choir. Garvin enjoyed painting and teaching art to his grandchildren. We are thankful for his lasting legacy of love and faithfulness. He will be deeply missed. Garvin is survived by Lynne, his beloved wife of 51 years, son Garvin Arthur (Loni), daughter Elizabeth Ann Stein (Stephen); grandchildren: Rachel, Sarah and Luke McGettrick; Lydia, Daniel, Jacob and Julia Stein; brothers Jewel (Mary) of Safford, Arizona, Dennis (Karen) of Des Moines, IA, Dale (Carole) of Gainesville, FL, cousins, nieces and nephews, as well as many dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers DeWayne and Veryl, and his sister Vivian. Memorial Service 11:00 AM Monday, June 16 at CENTRAL BAPTIST CHURCH, 420 N. Roy Street, St. Paul. A gathering begins at 10:00 AM. Private interment Ft. Snelling Cemetery. Memorial gifts preferred to Children's Shelter of Cebu or Central Baptist Church. Thanks to the caregivers of A Time for Help, staff at Clare Bridge of North Oaks, the chaplains and staff of Isabella House in Episcopal Church Home, and Our Lady of Peace Hospice for their kindness.
