Jeanette Gertrude (Sommers) KAMMAN Obituary
"Book Lady" of St. Paul April 24, 1926 - July 26, 2014 Jeanette was born in Hastings, MN and was placed with foster family of Roy and Anna Sommers who soon moved to St. Paul. The Sommers family included Donald, Jeanella & Jeanette, Quentin and Gordon. Jeanella & Jeanette were the same age and considered twins, Nelly & Netty. Jeanette went to Hendrix Grade School and Humbolt H.S. Class of 1944. She was a clerk-typist for Ramsey Co. for 40 years until retiring in 1985. Jeanette took evening courses from the U of M for 10 years and received a B.A. degree in 1960. She lived in the St. Luke's area, but when books accumulated purchased a house at Dale & Holly and attended the Cathedral of St. Paul. Jeanette considered all unwanted books as "orphan" books and gathered thousands which she stored in her home and two adjacent houses which she called the Kammandale Library. Jeanette's book activities were publicized by Joe Soucheray in the Pioneer Press and in City Pages & The Highland Villager. Survivors are Quentin Sommers (Beverly), and Goddaughter Sheri (Sommers) Zwack (Tim) and other Sommers Family members. Jeanette belonged to Latin American Club, Orphan Train Assoc. and Graphology Club. Thanks to St. Paul City Officials for tolerant treatment and to Southview Acres HCC for TLC. Thanks to Sheri for visits and room decorations, to Robert & Audrey Glenn for Rides; to book assists by Clark Hansen & Ina Valin; to Al Hanson for Mow & Snow and trustee L.J. Loomis. Mass of Christian Burial Friday 10 am at THE CATHEDRAL OF ST. PAUL. 239 Selby Ave. with visitation starting at 9 am. Interment Calvary Cemetery. 651-224-2341
