I met Jim when I was very young and wide eyed at political events, I found Jim was easy to talk to, fun to be around and a gentleman. It wasn't a long relationship but memorable for all the right reasons.

June 27, 2008

Cousins we were but in the early days Jim was somewhat younger, full of vim and vinegar and always teasing the older cousins to the brink of almost physical retaliation which thankfully never occurred. Then, it seemed all at once Jim grew into this amazing young man capturing the State Treasurer position with even futher potential to become a top politician in Minnesota and far beyond....had that been what he wanted in life. But, the practice of law seemed to hold a higher priority for Jim. He and I practiced law for a number of years together in Wayzata. When Miles formed his own firm Jim left to be a top gun with his dad and Mick. I am told he did a yomen's job with the clients and referring lawyers. He mastered his relationships with all these people and generated new business. With his famed father as his partner Jim was in a grove in the legal profession where he definitely belonged. Jim Lord may have abandoned the political life but he was a born politician to the very end. He cared about people. He cared about his clients. He was honest as the day is long.

Jim will be remembered most for his quick wit and great sense of humor. His laugh was infectious and he was always comfortable in a crowd. The numerous acclamations in this directory speaks volumes about the kind of person Jim was right to the very end. He will be sorely missed by many people. Our deepest sympathies go to Miles and Maxine, to Priscilla, to Virginia, their spouses, to Mick and to all Jim's wonderful nieces...

Rest in peace big guy. We shall see you on the other side. May God bless your soul.

Love, Mary and Mike

Judge Lord and Family: Having been out of town for a couple of weeks, I have just learned of Jim's passing. Like so many others, I was shocked and saddened. As others have said, this is a loss to the community and to the legal profession as well as to Jim's family and loved ones. It was a pleasure (so many years ago now) to have Jim as a law student here at William Mitchell. You all have my deepest sympathy.

I simply remember from my teen years that Jim was a very nice guy and good brother to Ginger. I also recall being so impressed when he moved up in Minnesota politics in the 70's to a point where he was a notable riding in the Excelsior "Roaring 20's" parade. Fun stuff. I send heartfelt sympathies from my family (Maggie, Sue, Steve) to all of you.

To the Lord family and Jim's many friends:
The funeral was a great tribute to Jim's memory. You all did such a good job sharing at such a difficult time.
Jim helped my late husband, Greg DeVaan in so many ways. I miss them both now.
He also was a great friend to my family and we have many happy memories of him participating in gatherings over the years.
I will miss seeing him tooling around town and running into him at the Navarre gas station. I will never forget his laugh, and his 4th of July parties.

My warmest sympathy to all of the Lord Family. I am very thankful for memories and how sometimes they bring us back to simpler times, when as kids we felt life had no obstacles.

I grew up with Jim “Jimmy” on Christmas Lake. What a great time. The summers, the winters, all of the seasons all of us kids got to enjoy at the lake, Near Mountain, Silver Lake…it was a special time to grow up and have friends like Jimmy.

The photo attached was taken around 1958…Miles was Minnesota Attorney General and we were Cub Scouts. I remember that day. Jimmy was pretty proud to show us where his Dad and the Governor worked. (Jim and my face are circled) Looking back at the picture that was taken that day, just makes me smile and remember fun times growing up with great guy.

Again, our thoughts are with all of the Lord Family.

To the Lord Family:

I have such fond memories of Jim, going back to Minnetonka High School. Although Jim was in the class behind me, we had such fun in the cast of "Love Rides the Rails" way back in 1964. The last time I saw Jim was at the 2006 All-School Reunion, where we had a chance to chat for a short time ... I wish now that we had talked longer.

I am so very sorry for your loss. You are all in my prayers.

God Bless you.

My memory of Jim and his shuttle boat on the lake. Jim was the lake taxi driver for events small and large. The kids found it exciting to ride with him and adults knew they would get home even on a dark night on the lake.

Jeff and I are so sorry for your loss. We were clients of Jim's and he was a truly wonderful, respectful, patient man and will be greatly missed.
Jim, rest in peace.

Association Manager

June 10, 2008

Jim Lord was a man of accomplishment. He was responsible for the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators becoming dynamic again after a period of inactivity from 1968 to 1977. Treasurer Lord served as NAUPA’s President during this period of renaissance from 1977 to 1981. He also hosted the first NAUPA Annual Conference of the association’s new beginning at the Marquette Inn in Minneapolis in 1978.

Under Treasurer Lord’s leadership, NAUPA began to push the federal government to return U.S. Savings Bonds and other unclaimed property back to the states’ citizens. NAUPA newsletters were developed during this time, regions were established, educational seminars were conducted, and the first state-by-state year-end statistics were produced. Annual state membership dues were began under Treasurer Lords tenure as president.

We offer our deepest condolences to Treasurer Lord’s family in their time of loss and grief. Treasurer Lord had many friends in our association and we recognize his dedication and passion.

Jim - Your unique laughter is a forever imprint in my memory. When I think of you, I hear your laughter, and it brings a smile to my face. As Sharon's sister, you and your family have always included me in your office celebrations and boat outings for which I will always remember and be grateful. Rest in peace.

I was dreadfully sorry to hear about Jim's death.

This dates me, but Jim was not only started law school with me at William Mitchell, but hired me to work for him when he was State Treasurer.

He treated everyone, always, with grace and courtesy. He was a true gentleman.

To the Lord family -

My deepest condolences go out to all of you. As many others were, I was totally surprised to see and hear of Jim's passing. Jim and I went through school together, from kindergarten to high school graduation at Minnetonka. My fondest memories with Jim were from our senior year when we were both in the play 'The Wizard of Oz'. Jim was the Cowardly Lion and I was the Tinman. It was truly, quite a time. Well, old friend, I believe you've truly arrived 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow'. May you be at peace, and your skies always blue.

Mick, Priscilla, Virginia, Miles and Maxine,

I was so saddened to hear of the loss of your beloved son and brother. There are no words that are adequate for this situation, but all of the memories I’ve read in this guest book show how highly he was regarded and how deeply loved.
Jim was so welcoming and good to me, as well as to my children. I’ll always remember whether telling a story or playing with his dog—whatever he did was wholehearted and full of life. He will be missed.
If I were there, I’d hug you all.

I only knew Jim in college in Oklahoma and when he moved down here to live with some Young Life friends. He brought with him a infectious personality that made people very comfortable from the start. We did some crazy stuff like riding around in a car with no brakes. I think I wore a couple pair of shoes out stopping that car. Jim was a great guy who had an ability to bless those around him with a caring soul and more fun than a life deserves. That kind of gift will be missed. Blessings to you Jimmy. Joe Morgan

I am truly saddened to hear of Jim's passing. He was one of a kind. He was "landlord" to Terry and I many years ago at Lafayette Bay...we lived upstairs and there were many nights when we came downstairs for fun and laughter...he called Terry "tenant" and he to us was "Land"....be in peace Jim -

My deepest sympathy to all the Lord family.

A hallmark of Jim Lord's character was simply that he liked people. He accepted us where he found us, seeming to care little for society's opinion of us while caring greatly about us as individuals. Perhaps ironically, given the overtones of his family name as well as the deserved prominence of his family, Jim seemed little concerned with class roles, almost to the point that he considered it all such a nuisance. I had the great fortune of meeting Jim early in my career and have ever since striven to take people where I find them, with a good nature and a compassionate heart, just as Jim always did. Forever grateful for his wonderful example.

Jim:
Your untiring efforts to reunite missing owners with their property started in Minnesota and spread throughout America. You fought every major financial institution in Minnesota to recover for your citizens that which was rightfully their's. Among those who cared for the ordinary citizen your efforts were beyond laudable, for all this you will be remembered forever.

Jim was a man called to the law as a profession because it allowed him a way to express his compassionate heart, which cared so deeply for people of all stations and backgrounds. The loss of someone with that much concern to share for others diminishes all of us. I will, however, fondly remember Jim's hearty laugh. He had such a love of life and zest for living. He saw the humor in every situation and that light-hearted spirit is what I will remember most. Rest well, my friend.

Dear Maxine, Miles and family,
I was so shocked to hear of Jim’s death when I flew in from Calif. last night. I can’t think of anything worse than losing a child and such a special one at that. Your whole family has always been so special to my family and to me.
One of my memories was of the afternoon Miles called from the office and I was baby-sitting. He said “pull some steaks out of the freezer, Hubert will be coming home with me for dinner”. I was just a kid! A baby-sitter! I panicked and called my Mom who came over to do the “job”. She was always so pleased to have made Hubert (Humphrey) that dinner. Our neighborhood was always so “wonder years” and you made my growing up years so special. Jim was such a lucky guy to have had such a supporting, warm family to grow up in. Please know you are in my thoughts and prayers....

There are so many memories, I do not know where to start. Jim would drive me back to Gustavus in his old (very cold) antique car when Mark couldn't. He was always there to help, have fun and laugh whether it be on the campaign trail or out on the boat for a summer cruise. His humor, wonderful style and great friendship will be sorely missed. Words can not begin to express the pain and loss we feel in our hearts. We are so blessed to have had the opportunity, honor and priviledge to have known such a wonderful man. We were one of Jim's clients after an automobile accident. We went from the client -attorney affiliation, to the man who was our mentor, financial advisor, banker, friend and Guardian Angel in such a short period of time. Jim never was "to busy" to talk to us. His network of friends and colleageus were like no other. Through Jim, we were introduced to such wonderful people as: Fred Bruno, Julie Nelson, Mark Stageberg, Obbie Kipper, Neut Strandemo, his father (Miles) and Sharon Guthrie... all of which had the utmost respect for Jim, as Jim did for them. We were just a "nobody" from Northern Minnesota, and Jim made us into a "Somebody" whenever we menitoned his name. If we live to be 100...we will never find a greater man. He was second to "none"! We lost a man that gave SO MUCH of himself, to help so many people like us, but knowing Jim....his work as a "Guardian Angel" will continue on forever and ever. Our love and prayers are with Miles, Maxine, Mick, Priscilla, Virginia, Sharon, Cheryl and Bob. May God watch over you and comfort you during this difficult time. With all our love, Dennis, Terri, Kyle and Derek Tysver
