Kathleen Popesh KINGMAN Obituary
Age 73 Beloved wife of Joseph R. Kingman III died from a brain tumor at her home in St. Paul on October 9, 2012. She was the daughter of the late Frank E. and Vida Popesh of Soudan Minnesota. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Marlene Sjoberg and Mary Whittlesey and survived by sisters Elizabeth Folkens and Patricia Morley and brother Frank E. Popesh Jr. She is also survived by stepchildren J. Brantley Kingman and Kate Kingman Wellington, three step grandchildren and many nephews and nieces. Kathy graduated as valedictorian of her class from the Tower - Soudan high school. Although the recipient of several college scholarships she felt it important to support herself and moved to the Twin Cities as a young and always independent woman. She never gave up her love of learning and became proficient in French and Spanish and regularly read a book or two a week. She was a gracious hostess, an outstanding cook and freely gave her time to community organizations as a board member or volunteer including The Penumbra Theatre, Sister Kenny and Abbott Northwestern Hospital. She managed Gov. Arne Carlson's interim office after his election in 1990 and served as a member of the Governors Residence Council. She rarely forgot a name or birthday whether the person was prominent or humble and had a special ability for reaching out to people. She loved to travel and could have happily settled in a small Tuscan cottage to which she returned several times. Aside from her St. Paul home, her favorite place was a cabin overlooking a small stream in northwestern Wisconsin. She loved wildflowers, birds and especially the raccoons that found her a soft touch for a cookie handout. As a family, we want to express our gratitude to the compassionate staff at United Hospital, the spiritual and health care offered by Allina Hospice and her caregivers, especially Joyce and Lensa. We also want to thank the amazing number of friends who have buoyed our spirits with their visits, cards and phone calls. There will be a celebration of her life on Thursday, October 25 at the University Club, 420 Summit Ave, in St. Paul from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. A family service will be held at a later date. Memorials may be directed to Allina Hospice Foundation, Friends of Crex (Meadows), 102 East Ave. Grantsburg, WI 54840 or the philanthropy of your choice.
