Richard STEVENS Obituary

Age 71 Of Saint Paul Died peacefully at his home on Sunday, April 28, 2013. He is survived by his wife Meredith Montgomery, sons Gregory and David, grandson Cole, and brother James Stevens. Dick graduated from the University of Minnesota -Twin Cities in 1964 with a BA in English Literature. His distinguished career in radio broadcasting, recording, audio and video production, and interactive media began at the student-run Radio K in Minneapolis. He subsequently produced programs for the Lutheran Church of America in Philadelphia and then held management positions at CBS Records in New York, EMC Corporation, Digital Excellence, Inc., and The ADS Group in Minnesota. Most recently he was elected a board member and became chair of the marketing committee at KFAI / Fresh Air Radio in the Twin Cities. Equally skilled and adept at running a business or handling the controls as an audio engineer and producer, Dick produced many internationally recognized media products for educational publishers throughout the U.S. and Europe. He was an avid collector of vintage synthesizers, which he used to create original musical compositions in his home recording studio. He was also a gifted painter, a voracious reader, and a discerning listener who appreciated music and was deeply interested in the properties of sound. His notable work ethic, enthusiasm, and inspiring qualities will be greatly missed by those he touched both professionally and personally. A memorial service will be held at 2 pm on Friday, May 31st at O'Halloran & Murphy Funeral Home (575 S. Snelling Ave., St Paul, MN). Memorials preferred to KFAI Radio (1808 Riverside Avenue, Minneapolis, MN 55454). 651/698-0796

Just found this page. I worked with Dick at KUOM as an engineer at the Minnesota School of the Air. Later on, I did a lot of photography for filmstrips at EMC. He was a great friend.

I just heard of Dick's passing tonight, and it makes me very sad indeed. I worked in his sales department at Digital Excellence as a sales assistant, and he was always very kind and gracious to me, even the few times I ran into him after I left. So sorry for your loss, Meredith. I'm glad to have known him.

I was so very sad to learn of Dick's passing. I've known him since my EMC days back in the late 80s and have many good memories. My thoughts and hugs are sent to you, Meredith, and the rest of the family. I am so sorry for your loss.

I learned yesterday the very sad news of Dick's Passing. I had a tremendous amount of respect both professionally and personally for
him.

He carried a great wealth of industry knowledge. He was a mentor, strong leader and a decent and kind human being.

My deepest sympathy, thoughts and prayers are with Stevens family in thier time of loss.

I got my start at KUOM at the U of MN also, as did several others who went on to community radio station KFAI. We were very fortunate to have such a talented, hard working, thoughtful, and kind gentleman as a colleague on the KFAI board.

I am a Board member of FKAI and so appreciated getting to know Dick. Smart guy, kind and hardworking. So great that memorials go to KFAI. He loved our Fresh Air Radio. Condolences to his family.

Meredith, Greg, and David--I've been sad these past weeks knowing that Dick is no longer with us. I've truly enjoyed the past 28 years of knowing him and sharing many family get-togethers with all of you. I still can't really believe he's gone--I prefer to think that we're all playing a game of hide-and-seek and Dick is just taking a long time to find (he is awfully clever and that would be like him, wouldn't it?) Anyway, take care--I'll see you at the service. --Karen

Dick was our neighbor for more than 30 years in St. Paul. He was a welcome sight at our condominium association meetings, as he always provided a calm, reasoned perspective.

What I valued even more than his great professionalism and caring, was his sense of humor. He was the complete package, and loved by all lucky enough to know him.
