W. Donald SPRING Obituary
Age 88 Of North Oaks Passed away on October 1, 2013. Don was born and grew up in Racine, Wisconsin, served in the Army Air Corps during World War II, and attended Marquette University. After completing graduate studies at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, Don moved his young family to Morris in 1960, the year University of Minnesota, Morris, opened. One of the original faculty members at UMM, Don was Chairman of the Humanities Division, overseeing the departments of art history, studio arts, communications, rhetoric, English, French, German, music, philosophy, Spanish, and theatre arts. Widely acknowledged as a superb lecturer, Don introduced thousands of students to Shakespeare, Chaucer, Emily Dickinson, and other greats of English and American literature over his 36-year teaching career. He loved films and developed the first foreign film program at UMM. He was also recognized for his pivotal role representing UMM on the University of Minnesota consultative committees. Don retired in 1996 and enjoyed several years of traveling with his wife, Evelyn, throughout Europe. Survived by Evelyn and children Elizabeth, Bill, Therese, Ruth, and Margaret; grandchildren Nathan, Jessica, Megan, and Caroline; and great-grandchildren Nicole, Tristan, and Treva. Preceded in death by his daughter Susan, parents George and Irene Spring, and siblings Frank, Ruth, Lorraine, and Lucile. A private memorial service has been held.
