Carol James "Jim" MICHAUD Obituary
Col. AF/ANG Ret. On October 31, 2013 Age 90 Born June 5, 1923 in White Bear Lake, MN. Civilian & Military Careers extended over fifty years in Aviation, Engineering & Emergency Services. Col Jim began his career in 1942 as an Air Force Volunteer in the West Coast Flying Training Command, graduating from Luke Field, Arizona in August 1943 as a P-40 Warhawk Fighter Pilot. He completed more than 100 Missions in P-40's, P-51 Mustangs & P-47 Thunderbolts, flying in North Africa, the Mediterranean & Europe. After active duty, he continued his service in the Air Reserve & Air National Guard as a Pilot & Unit Commander of several military organizations. He was recalled to active duty for the Korean Conflict as an Air Defense pilot & Director of Operations, 514 Air Defense Group, which was followed by an extended tour of duty as Electronics Flight Facilities & Officer for Hq. 3rd Air Force, London, England. Employed by Honeywell as an Aero Space Engineer, he worked on advanced aircraft & space projects for NASA's Mercury, Gemini and Apollo programs. He was again recalled to active duty and continued to serve in the US Air Force & Air National Guard until his retirement in 1979. After retirement he continued to support veterans programs & campaigned to improve veterans' services for the many WW II and Korean Conflict Veterans in the Twin Cities. Promoted to Brevet General some months after retirement, he preferred the title Colonel. He will be remembered for his forceful, candid personality, his undying desire to keep the "old troops" together and his pride in his family. Preceded in death by his wife, Jean, sister, Margaret Conklin, and brother Joseph. Survived by his brother, Lawrence Michaud (Maxine), children, Carol Faust (James), Julie Papeleux (John), Mary Bohl (Ron), and Scott Michaud (Jennifer), 9 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Mass of Christian Burial 11:00 AM Wednesday at ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST CATHOLIC CHURCH (835 2nd Ave., New Brighton). Visitation 4-8 PM Tuesday at ROSEVILLE MEMORIAL CHAPEL (2245 N. Hamline Ave., Roseville) 651-631-2727 and also 1 hour before Mass at the church on Wednesday. Private interment at Fort Snelling National Cemetery. Memorials preferred to the Minnesota Air Guard Museum, Allina Hospice Foundation or Little Sisters of the Poor.
