Rose Victoria BARON Obituary
96 year old matron of the Minneapolis based Baron Family passed away at her residence at the New Brighton Rehab and Care Center on February 12, 2014, after a brief illness. Rose provided strength for her family until her final hours. Although bedridden in her final years of life, she continued to live life fully and enjoyed daily visits from her extended family. She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Edmund, and her son, Robert. Rose was born on March 3, 1917 to a country family of 5 children in a farm home outside of St. Cloud, MN. She grew up and graduated from high school in St. Cloud and attended St. Cloud Normal School (now University of Minnesota St. Cloud). After graduating with a degree in Secretarial Studies, she became a secretary to the president of the school before leaving for New York City to follow her future husband, Edmund, to his naval port of New York Harbor. She resided in New York City throughout the Second World War, working at Toffenetti's Restaurant and the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel. During the war, Edmund made 42 crossings of the Atlantic Ocean, carrying troops on his ship, the Queen Elizabeth. Since the Queen Elizabeth was the fastest ship on the ocean at the time, they enjoyed their leave time together in New York every month or so. After the war, they resided in Dinkytown at the University of Minnesota, where they began their family with their first child, Richard. As the family grew, they bought a large tract of land in Columbia Heights, built a new home and expanded their family by four more children; Robert, Mary, Catherine, and Ronald. For the next 24 years, Rose devoted her life to raising her children to be productive Christian citizens, gardening, canning, housekeeping, and church affairs. During these years she also held a job at the Leamington Hotel in Minneapolis. By 1969, with their children grown, she and Edmund built their dream home near the Mississippi River in Fridley, where they hosted many holiday celebrations. In 1994, now retired, they moved to a single level condo in Coon Rapids. Rose is survived by her children, Richard Baron M.D., Mary Aspelund and her husband Allan, Catherine Weiss and her husband Donald, and Ronald Baron. She is also survived by grandchildren, Christopher Aspelund, Jennifer (Steve) Weixel, Matthew Aspelund, April (Terry) Herman, Melody (Tony) Mauer, Zachary (Stephanie) Weiss, Dustin Weiss, and 7 great grandchildren, Samantha, Jessica, Isabella, Nathanial, Anastacia, Annette and Zandrine. The visitation for Rose's celebration of life will be held on Monday, February 17, at Miller Funeral Home, 6210 Hwy 65 NE, Fridley MN from 5-8PM with a prayer service at 6PM. The Funeral will be held at The Church of St. Timothy, 707 89th Ave NE, in Blaine, MN at 10 AM on Tuesday, February 18, with a visitation one hour prior to mass. Luncheon will follow.
