1950 - 2014 | Obituary Condolences
A celebration of the life and music of Keith Luis will be held Saturday, May 10 from 5-9 PM at Poor Richard's Commonhouse, 8301 Normandale Blvd., Bloomington, MN. A college teacher and recording artist, Keith died in Austin, TX on July 28, 2013. He was preceded in death by parents Carlos and Lillian Luis of Shakopee and St. Paul. Keith is survived by brothers Richard (Juanita) Luis of Little Canada and David Luis (Peter Merrick) of Sydney, Australia; sister Deborah Edwards (E.J.) of Scottsdale, AZ; nephew and niece Max and Rebecca Edwards; and many cousins. Keith was born November 27, 1950, and raised in Shakopee. After graduation from Blake, he earned his B.A. at Columbia, followed by an M.A. and Ph.D. from Tulane. He taught English at Michigan State, Texas State and Tulane and also served as English Department Chair and Director of Humanities at St. Bernard Parish Community College, Chalmette, LA. Keith was a sensitive, clever vocalist and songwriter who played guitar, mandolin, percussion and lap steel guitar. He was a bluesrocker who led the Blues Gothics combo in New Orleans and Austin. Under the stage name Dr. Louie, Keith wrote and performed six songs for compilation albums (Hungry for Music Records) and created six albums/CDs of his own on Tain-Hamilton and Jellyroll Records: New Orleans Gothic; We Must Dig; A Holiday Gift for You; Bolts From the Blue; Opposites Reconciled, Extremes Met; and Fillin' the Billie. He also was a world traveler, avid sports fan, trivia buff, and gifted chess player who chased wildflowers all across Texas and Australia.
