Russell W. BURRIS Obituary
Age 87 Of Minneapolis Died Monday, July 7 of natural causes. Born 11/25/26, he grew up in Wellington, KS. He left for WWII the night of his high school graduation, joining the hospital corp in the Navy, serving in the Pacific. He went to college in Boulder, CO on the GI bill, then returned to his hometown to teach high school math. He attended grad school in Bloomington, IN where he met the love of his life, Jane Gaddis of Oak Lawn, IL. They married and 3 years later moved to Minneapolis where they created a wonderful life with success at the University of Minnesota, great friendships and a close family. Russell became a professor in Educational Psychology where he ran the Center for Research in Human Learning. He then moved to the Law school where he co-founded and directed the Center for Computer-Assisted Legal Instruction. After retirement, he and Jane traveled, often through Elder Hostel, continuing their interest in lifelong learning. Preceded in death by wife Jane. Survived by children Julia Phillips (Chuck), David Burris-Brown (Sharon) and Lydia Lafferty (Bob Koski), grandchildren Alicia, Taylor, David, Blake, and Spencer, step-grandchildren Ben and Nate, and brother Bud Burris (Charlotte), and niece Kyle (Nick). Memorial gathering Tuesday, Aug. 5, 4-7pm at the Campus Club, 403 Coffman Memorial Union, 300 Washington Ave SE, Minneapolis. Memorials preferred to the University of Minnesota Foundation towards the establishment of the Russell W. Burris Memorial Fellowship in Educational Psychology, University of Minnesota Foundation, P.O. Box 860266, Minneapolis, MN 55486-0266.
