Marilyn MATT Obituary

In Loving Memory August 14, 1929 - January 17, 2016 Marilyn Matt, 86, passed away on January 17, 2016 in United Hospital in St. Paul after suffering the effects of a sudden stroke less than a week earlier. She is preceded in death by beloved husband, Walter, daughter Mary (Jonathan) Williams, and four siblings, including her beloved older sister, Joan Beyer Swanson, who passed away suddenly just 36 hours prior to Marilyn's passing. Marilyn is survived by children, Catherine (John) Laskey, Gretchen (James) Mills, W. Joseph (Christina) Matt, Jane (Colin) Cain, Joan (Joseph) Bourbeau, Michael (Carol) Matt, Christina Matt, and Carolyn (Thomas) Brannon. In addition to her 9 children, Marilyn also leaves behind 39 devoted grandchildren, 61 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She's also survived by her cat, "Kitty". A graduate of Derham Hall in St. Paul, Marilyn was the wife of Walter Matt, RIP, editor of The Wanderer and founder of The Remnant, two of the oldest Catholic newspapers in the country. Having lived her entire life in Minnesota, this St. Paul native is mother, grand-mother and great-grandmother to 110 offspring who will miss her beyond measure. Marilyn's wake will be held Wednesday evening from 4 to 8 at Willwerscheid Funeral Home (1167 Grand Ave., St. Paul Minnesota) and the Requiem Mass will take place at 10:30 am on Thursday, January 21 at the Church of St. Augustine in South St. Paul (408 3rd Street N), followed by a luncheon at the Church of the Holy Trinity in South St. Paul (749 6th Ave South). In lieu of flowers, Masses for the deceased would be deeply appreciated, as well as prayers for the repose of her soul. God bless you, Granny. We'll never forget and we'll never stop loving you.

I remember when your folks got married and Dad and Shel and I put rice in everything. Years later your mom said that she was still finding more rice. I remember as the children were born our family went to your house to welcome another new cousin. I also remember the fun on the sledding hill. Your mom's organization skills and cooking for family gatherings were phenomenal. We always had a great time.

Our thoughts and prayers in loving memory of your mother and father.

To all of my cousins and their families Im sending heartfelt sympathy on the passing of your mother. I have fond memories of your mother and all of you in your little home in Little Canada. We had a lot of fun on the old tire swing in the back yard. Of course all that playing was followed by a wonderful meal that your mother made. When remembering your mother with a tear in your eye, may your have a smile in your heart. cw

May you rest in peace, Marilyn! It has been a long time, but I remember babysitting for your children when I was growing up in Little Canada. You were blessed with an extraordinary family. May they find comfort in the many memories of special times shared with you! May God Bless all of you!
