Richard "Bud" Bowman passed from this life on January 7, 2013. No services will be held. Born November 3, 1914, in Laytonville, California, he was number 9 of 10 children born to Andy Bowman and Ada Pinches Bowman. Bud attended the Pepperwood Schoolhouse north of Laytonville in his young years. He was in the first class to attend the new Willits High School. He traveled from the Bowman Ranch north of Laytonville to the Willits High School every school day along the old Redwood Highway. He saw the first automobile to drive through Laytonville on the future 101 Highway and saw many other firsts. His mother introduced him to the young girl named Catherine Caroline Shanahan. She became his wife four years later. They were married 74 years. Catherine passed from this life three years ago. They leave behind three children: Norman Bowman, Andrew Bowman, and Martha Bowman; grandchildren: Michele Bowman, Ashlee Bowman, Brody Bowman, Lisa Daily, Lori Colburn, and Deon Hunter; great-grandchildren: Austin Presley, Brance Bowman, Trevin Daily, Brexton Daily, Bree Daily, and Joey Daily. He was deeply loved and respected by his family. During World War II, Bud was assigned by the U.S. Government to work as a machinist in San Jose. He was also assigned to attend the CHP academy. After the war, he returned to Laytonville where he became the Government Trapper; and, a few years later, the County of Mendocino road foreman in Laytonville. He also enjoyed a lifetime of raising cattle. Bud was widely known for his horse training abilities. His ability to train livestock dogs and hunting dogs was widely known and also written about in national magazines. He was always a cowboy. Nearly every day of his life, he wondered the mountains of Mendocino County. He walked with his dogs and led his horse. It was once said that he was the last of the mountain men. That seems to be an accurate description.
