SPARTANBURG — Herbert C. "Herb" Canada passed away at Summit Hills Retirement Community in Spartanburg on Sept. 19, 2013 after a brief illness.

He was preceded in death by his wife Betty; younger son Charles (Chuck) mother Mamie; and sister Billie.

He is survived by his older son Richard; daughter-in-law Jackie; grandchildren Christine, Dustin, Jennifer, Daniel, Steve, Evan and Jason; and great-grandchildren Tyler, Haley, Liz, Derrick, Chase, Zachary, Elyssa, Jayda and Lily.

Herb was born in Lubbock, Texas on July 27, 1924 and resided in the southwest until the age of 17 at which time he joined the U.S. Marine Corps several months prior to the attack on Pearl Harbor. He was a member of the Marine Corps through World War II, participating in the battle for Guadalcanal and other smaller actions. After the war he married Betty Eslinger who was to be his wife of 64 years.

He entered the forging business and over the years became nationally recognized for his forging knowledge and expertise.

Herb moved to Union with his wife Betty in 1981 as the driving force behind the relocation of Webb Forging Company to Carlisle. He remained at Webb Forging as Vice President and General Manager until his retirement in 1990. Webb Forging remains a major employer in Union County.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and had attained the 32nd degree in the Scottish Rite. The highest attainable level.

He is remembered as a loving family man, a good friend, a strong leader and loyal patriot. He loved the Carolinas and South Carolina became his adopted home state. He and his wife chose to remain in the upstate after his retirement.

Memorial services will be held at Bobo Funeral Chapel in Spartanburg on Oct. 5, 2013 with visitation beginning at 11 a.m. and a short service following. The family has requested that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Wounded Warriors Project, Jacksonville, FL.
