CENTER OSSIPEE - Roland C. Stockbridge, "The Legend," passed away Saturday, Nov. 23, 2013, at age 74 at Huggins Hospital, Wolfeboro.
The son of Willard and Lavinia Stockbridge, Roland was born Oct. 29, 1939, in Wolfeboro. He grew up in a family of four boys, including twin brother Richard and brothers Willard and Dennis. He graduated from Kennett High School in 1958 and joined the Army National Guard, where he served from 1958 to 1962. He married high school sweetheart Loretta in 1959. He later became the superintendent of the Water and Sewer Department of Ossipee, but found his true calling serving as chief of the Center Ossipee Fire Department from 1969 to 2001. He was also a local pastor at Moultonville United Methodist Church, Sanbornville Methodist Church, and Newfield Methodist Church.
He has served the community as a founding member of the Ossipee Valley Mutual Fire Aid Association, local Scoutmaster, Little League coach, Junior Firefighter leader, and was named Citizen of the Year for 2004. Roland has affected many lives in different ways and has always been a listening ear to all. He was a mentor for many young and seasoned firefighters and "a true disciple" as quoted by MUMC Pastor James Nason. In 2011, the Center Ossipee Fire Department was dedicated as the Roland C. Stockbridge Safety Building, where he is otherwise known as "The Legend" and "Pastor-Chief."
He is survived by wife, Loretta; children Glenn Stockbridge, DPM, Wayne Stockbridge, and Sandra Freeman; daughters-in-law Donna and Jenifer Stockbridge, and son-in-law Robert Freeman; grandchildren Arielle, Elizabeth, and Harrison Stockbridge, Gabrielle and Jacquelyn Brown, and three step-grandchildren, Bob, Tracy and Matt Freeman.
