SANDOWN - George H. Green Jr., 86, passed away peacefully at his home on Sept. 3, 2013, surrounded by his loving family. Mr. Green was the husband of the late Lyle E. (Britton) Green, to whom he was married for 51 years.
Born in Haverhill, Mass., on July 8, 1927, George was the son of the late George H. Sr. and Dorothy A. (Haigh) Green.
George was educated in Haverhill, Mass. He joined the U.S. Army
in 1945 and served in Japan as a teacher, giving instructions in operating generators. He worked as foreman for Mavrofrides Brothers for 33 years. He and his wife then moved to Deland, Fla., where he worked for the City of Ormond Beach as a building maintenance foreman in the Parks and Recreation Department. He retired in 1994, and he and Mrs. Green enjoyed traveling to various destinations in the U.S. and United Kingdom. He moved to Sandown in 2007 to be closer to his family.
George was a member of Good Shepherd United Methodist Church, where he served as Sunday school superintendent for more than 20 years. He was active in the church-sponsored Troop No. 1, Boy Scouts of America. George was a member of Saggahew Lodge A.F.& A.M., Scottish Rite, 32 degree. As a young man, he raced his own car, No. 155, at the Pine Speedway and the New England circuit. He was a NASCAR enthusiast, enjoyed woodworking and gardening. He had a special love for birds and fed them all year long.
George is survived by his daughters, Deborah A. Sargent and husband Richard of Pittsburg and Jean A. Henderson and husband Rodney of Houlton, Maine, Melanie G. Ward and husband Andrew of Danville; grandchildren Corey Ward and wife Katie of Danville, Maghen Ward and husband Matthew Butterick of Berwick, Maine, Bonnie and Jacob Henderson of Houlton, Maine, and Katie Hafford and husband Nate of Mars Hill, Maine; step-grandchildren Lisa Finneran and husband Shawn of Raymond and Ryan Sargent and wife Lyndi of Lee; great-grandchildren Alisha, Molly and Matthew Finneran, Allison Sonia, Anna and Karsten Sargent, Lilie Henderson, Luke and Finola Butterick, and Colton and Kylie Ward; his sister, Evelyn Sullivan of Haverhill; and his dear friend and companion, Marilyn Boyd; and several nieces and nephews. George was predeceased by his sisters, Emma Jordan and Shirley Walsh.
services: Relatives and friends are invited to calling hours and a Masonic service from 1:30 to 2:45 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28 at Dole, Childs & Shaw Funeral Home, 148 Main St., Haverhill, Mass. The memorial service will follow at 3 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment at Riverview Cemetery will be private.
