MANCHESTER - Georgia Chekos of West Harwich, Mass., and Manchester passed away on Nov. 24, 2012.
She was born in Manchester on April 25, 1923, the daughter of the late Peter and Penelope (Papadopulos) Karafotis. She graduated from Manchester Central High School and Hesser College. Georgia was joined in marriage with James Chekos on July 15, 1945. A 32-year resident of Wakefield, Mass., she was a member and past president of the Crystal Garden Club and sang with the Polymnia Society. Georgia graduated from Rittner's School of Floral Design in Boston. She was an instructor of floral design as well as working in the floral industry.
In retirement, Georgia and Jim relocated to the Cape and wintered in Florida on Hutchinson Island, where she was active in St. George Greek Orthodox Church and St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, respectively, where she sang in the choir and was active with the Philoptochos Societies. In Florida she was honored to be asked and enjoyed working as a fashion runway model for several seasons.
She is survived by her loving husband of 67 years, James; three children, Harry Chekos and his wife Kathleen, of Wakefield, Mass., Thalia June Chekos Thompson and her husband Steven, of Gainesville, Ga., and Mark Chekos and his wife Carla, of Roswell, Ga.; five grandchildren, Dr. Amy Sedgwick, James Chekos, Andrea Miller, Stephanie Chekos, and Alexander Chekos; two great-grandchildren, Alexis and Gabrielle Sedgwick; three sisters, Eve Rodis, Mary Dadasis, and Sophia Chiotelis. She was preceded in death by a brother, Chris Karafotis.
services: Calling hours will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 29, with a Trisagian service beginning at 7 p.m. at Goodwin Funeral Home, 607 Chestnut St., Manchester. The funeral service will begin at noon on Friday, Nov. 30, at St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 650 Hanover St., Manchester. Burial will follow at Pine Grove Cemetery, Manchester.
