BONITA SPRINGS, Fla. - Leonard R. Engelhardt, 92, of Bonita Springs, died on Aug. 4, 2013, at Hospice in Fort Myers, after a brief period of declining health.
He was born in Manchester, N.H., Aug. 2, 1921, to Franklin and Marion (Morrison) Engelhardt. He attended the Parker school and graduated from Manchester High School West.
He married Dorothy (Schricker) Engelhardt in May of 1943. During their 70 years of marriage, they resided in Manchester and Bedford, N.H., before moving to Bonita Springs, in 1984.
Mr. Engelhardt was a World War II
veteran of the U.S. Army
Air Corps. After military service he joined the Manchester Police Department. He retired as a captain in 1974 after 25 years. During his career he was active with the Manchester Police Relief Association as well as a board member of the N.H. Police Association. Following retirement he worked at the N.H. Crime Commission and as chief bailiff at Hillsborough County Superior Court.
He enjoyed genealogy, collecting antiques, seashells and creating sea art. He was a long time member of the Bektash Shrine, Scottish Rite; Washington Lodge 61. He was a 32nd degree Freemason and was a past president of the Noble Travelers Shriners in Bonita. He enjoyed fishing in the Gulf, working in his yard and spending time with his family.
He is survived by his wife Dorothy Engelhardt, of Naples; his sons, Larry Engelhardt and his wife Mary-Jane, of Fort Myers, Ronald Engelhardt, and his wife Elaine, of Merrimack, N.H.; seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson; his brother Clifford Engelhardt and his wife Nancy of West Chazy, N.Y.; several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by two brothers, Franklin Engelhardt, of Watertown, N.Y., and Alson Engelhardt, of Belmont, N.H.
services: Calling hours will be Monday, Aug. 26, from 10 to 11 a.m. at Lambert Funeral Home. A funeral liturgy will follow in the funeral at 11 a.m. Burial will take place in Pine Grove Cemetery.
