Robert H. McCann

FORT PIERCE, Fla., - Robert H. McCann, 82, of Fort Pierce, and formerly of Manchester, N.H., died Nov. 18, 2012, at his home.

Born in Portsmouth, N.H., on Nov. 24, 1929, he was the son of Hugh G. and Katherine L. (Couhig) McCann. He resided in Manchester for many years before moving to Florida in 1991.

He graduated from Portsmouth High School, class of 1947. He also studied at Northeastern University and the University of New Hampshire.

Mr. McCann served with the U.S. Army.

Early in his career, he was assistant director of the Portsmouth Housing Authority, with the primary responsibility for the colonial restoration project of Strawbery Banke.

In 1966, he was assistant director of urban renewal with the Manchester Housing Authority, where he directed the planning, development, and administration of all public housing and redevelopment projects. Mr. McCann retired as executive director in 1989.

A loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather, his family was the center of his life. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, and computers.

Family members include his wife of 57 years, Louise (Ouellette) McCann; his son, Steven McCann and his wife, LiWen; a daughter, Kathleen Shumate and her husband, Ken; three grandchildren, Christina, Samantha, and Robert; his sister, Sandra St. Laurent. He was predeceased by his brother, William.

Following cremation, a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Friday at 10:30 a.m. in Saint Catherine of Siena Church, Webster Street, Manchester. Urn burial with military honors will take place in Calvary Cemetery, Portsmouth.
