William H. Stearns

MANCHESTER - William H. "Bill" Stearns, 71, of Manchester, died on Friday, Aug. 23, 2013, at his home, surrounded by his loving family.He was born in Manchester on March 26, 1942, the son of the late Lester H. and Genevieve (Joyce) Stearns.

Bill was employed with the Manchester Highway Department for eight years and was a firefighter for the Manchester Fire Department, Engine 7, for over 21½ years until his retirement in 1989. He was also a member of the Manchester Firefighters Association.

Bill enjoyed woodworking, making many heirlooms for his children and grandchildren like Christmas mangers, chairs, and cradles. He also enjoyed gardening, his fish pond, and working on his 1964 maroon Corvair that he restored. Above all, Bill loved his family and cherished his grandchildren. He will be remembered for his loving nature, and his dedication to helping others. He is loved and appreciated by many neighbors, co-workers, and friends.

Members of the family include his loving wife of 50 years, Ann (McCabe) Stearns; and their two daughters, Genevieve Joyce and her husband Manuel Soares Jr. of Manchester, and Laura Ann and her husband Michael Zogopoulos of Weare; two sisters, Patricia "Patsy" Stearns of Manchester, and Margaret and her husband Richard Nazzaro of Charlotte, N.C.; four grandchildren, Manuel Joseph Soares III, William Lester Soares, Mary Kathrine Soares, and Brandon Michael Zogopoulos, who were the light of his life. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and cousins whom he loved and cared deeply about.

Bill was predeceased by his infant brother, Thomas Stearns.

services: Calling hours will be held on Monday, Aug. 26, from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Cain & Janosz Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 74 Brook St., corner of Pine Street, Manchester. The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 27, at 10 a.m. in the funeral home with Father Bob, St. Pius X Church, officiating. Burial will immediately follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, Bedford.
