BEDFORD - William "Bill" Hill, 90, of Bedford, and formerly of Nashua for many years, passed away peacefully Wednesday, May 15, 2013, at Elliot Hospital in Manchester.
Born in Mt. Olive, N.J., on Dec. 2, 1922, he was the son of the late William and Grace Hill. Bill enlisted in the Navy in 1942 and served in the Pacific on the repair ship, the USS Oceanus. In 2012, Sen. Jeanne Shaheen presented him with the Navy Good Conduct Medal, World War II
Victory Medal, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with two Bronze stars
and the Combat Action Ribbon. After the war ended, he married the love of his life, A. Elizabeth "Lib" Harris on Oct. 28, 1945. They had three children, Leslie Grovenstein, Margaret "Peg" Bueddeman and Susan Dunn.
A resident of Nashua since 1961, Mr. Hill worked as an electronic engineer with top secret clearance for many years at Sanders Associates, now BAE. After retiring, he fixed television sets for friends, family and others. He loved staying busy and only accepted enough money to cover the cost of repairs (or none at all, if he knew someone didn't have much money). Bill enjoyed tinkering and could fix anything that was broken in the most ingenious manner.
Bill also loved to garden and continued to garden after moving from his home in Nashua to Carlyle Place in Bedford. While at Carlyle, he enjoyed playing bingo and visiting with the therapy dogs, as well as attending musical performances. He especially loved Big Band music. Bill enjoyed seeing children and would eat at Ruby Tuesday almost every weekend; the staff knew him so well that they would seat him at a table near the window facing the stroller rentals so he could look at the children as they passed by.
Another passion of his was attending antique car shows where he would get involved in conversations with the owners regarding the type of engines in their vehicles. Bill also loved anything related to space and enjoyed programs at the Christa McAuliffe Planetarium.
Bill will be missed by his daughters, Peg Bueddeman and her husband Steve of Raleigh, N.C., and Sue Dunn and her husband Al of Hampstead; granddaughter Lori Cassell and her husband Justin and their five children, Josef, Ethan, Chelsea, Andrew and Emilie of Mobile, Ala.; granddaughter Jennifer Kehoe and her husband Ken of Silver Spring, Md.; and granddaughter Colleen Dunn of Albuquerque, N.M. Mr. Hill was predeceased by his wife Lib in 2008, and daughter Leslie in 1987.
