Dorothy K. Smyrl

MANCHESTER - Dorothy K. Smyrl of Manchester passed away on Jan. 20, 2013.

She was born in Manchester on Sept. 28, 1916, the daughter of the late Charles and Ester (Nelson) Kimball.

She graduated from Manchester Central High School, Class of 1934B. Dorothy went on to graduate from Leslie Normal School (college), earning her teaching certificate in 1937. She taught school in a one-room schoolhouse for several years in Hooksett. Dorothy was joined in marriage on June 22, 1940, with Albert W. Smyrl. Upon marriage, Dorothy became a homemaker, caring for her three sons. She enjoyed teaching piano and playing the organ at Hooksett Congregational Church and was active at the First Congregational Church in Manchester, where she taught Sunday School and was a past Women's Union president. She was also the director of and taught at the church's nursery school. Dorothy was also a Girl Scout leader.

Dorothy is survived by three sons, Jon Smyrl and his wife, Judith, of Port Clinton, Ohio, Peter Smyrl and his wife, Dayle, of Candia and Charles Smyrl and his wife, Wendy, of Bedford; six grandchildren, Jon Smyrl, Jill Whyte, Eric Smyrl, Lauren Koron, Derek Smyrl and Allison Smyrl; two great-grandchildren, Victoria and Connor Koron; and a sister, Ethel Webster of Long Island, N.Y. She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert, in 1992.
