Oscar Straw Obituary

WEARE -- Oscar Albert Straw 92, died Dec. 13, 2009, following a period of declining health.

He was born in Mountain Mills in Wilmington, Vt., to Alston A. and Eudora B. (Carter) Straw. He graduated from Lexington (Mass.) High School in 1936 and attended the Manchester Institute of Arts and Sciences. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

He lived in Weare since 1945. He was employed as an attendant at the New Hampshire State Hospital, custodian of Weare Schools and with Hitchner Manufacturing of Milford.

He enjoyed participating in theater, music, painting, reading, sculpting, watching baseball, boxing, science and historical documentaries and old movies.

He was a member of American Legion Post 65 of Weare, the former Congregational Church of Weare, Weare Monthly Meeting of Friends (Quakers), and Weare and New Hampshire historical societies.

Members of his family include his wife of 58 years, Elizabeth W. Purington of Weare; two children, William A. Straw and Alice S. Thomson, both of Weare; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

SERVICES: A graveside funeral service with military honors will be held in the spring at Pine Grove Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to Concord Regional Visiting Nurse Association, Hospice House, 30 Pillsbury St., Concord 03301.
