Hollis Harrington Obituary

Hollis E. "Buzz" Harrington, age 84, peacefully passed away June 11, 2017, following a brief illness. He was born in Delmar, NY on June 15, 1932, the only son of the late Hollis and Elizabeth (Hewlett) Harrington.

Buzz was raised and educated in the Albany, NY area and attended the University of New Hampshire. After his sophomore year, he was drafted and served in an Army Airborne Unit. After his tour of duty, he returned and finished college at the University of New Hampshire, where he played defensive end on their football team, and met and married his wife Jane. It was in the service where he picked up the nickname "Buzz," which he preferred to "Hollis," "Buster" or "Junior," and it stayed with him the rest of his life.

Buzz followed in his father's footsteps and became a second-generation banker. However, it was a college professor who truly convinced him that it was the correct career path. He started his banking career at Indian Head National Bank as a management trainee in 1957. He eventually worked his way up to become the President of the bank.

Buzz was a champion for everyone he met, particularly those in less fortunate situations. He served as chairman of the board of the New Hampshire Housing Finance Agency, which provides support to low-income families. He was also actively involved on many other boards and volunteered throughout his life for agencies including: NH Charitable, United Way, NH Lakes, Community Hospice House, Meals on Wheels, and the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Nashua. Buzz truly believed in serving his community and giving back wherever he could.

Buzz's life was not only about serving his community, but also taking care of his large clan. He raised his family in Nashua and one of his greatest joys came from caring for his entire family. Buzz remained forever young to his children and grandchildren, providing an example of how to live life humbly and with great integrity. He had a huge heart and he shared it with many family, friends and community members - leaving a large footprint for all.

Buzz was an avid outdoorsman and hard worker who loved to golf, ski, and simply being outdoors. He enjoyed doing yardwork, chopping wood, and skiing down the slopes of Cannon Mountain. He also spent countless hours on Stinson Lake with his family and friends, providing a place for everyone to stay connected and be outdoors.

Buzz's family includes his beloved wife Jane; his son, Chris Harrington (who predeceased him in 2001) and his wife Leslie Harrington of Milton, MA; his daughter Jody and her husband Stephen Buzzell of Stowe, VT; Wendy and her husband David Matthews of Queensbury, NY; and Lisa and her husband Jon Segal of Rye, NH. He is also survived by his 10 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren, Kyle and Mandy Harrington and their son Mason of Middleton, MA; Lindsey (Harrington) and Peter Scully and their children Taylor, Molly, Paige and Shea of Milton, MA; Kelly Harrington and fiancé Ryan Sesselman of Lake George, NY; Brighid, Shane, and Connor Buzzell of Stowe, VT; Alex (Matthews) and Brian Kochon and their son Matthew of Glens Falls, NY; William Matthews of Queensbury, NY; and Sam and Casey Segal of Rye, NH.

Final arrangements have been made and a memorial service is planned for Monday, June 19, at 10:30 a.m. at the First Church, 1 Concord Street, Nashua, NH.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts in Buzz Harrington's memory can be made to the Community Hospice House, 210 Naticook Road, Merrimack, NH 03054. The DAVIS FUNERAL HOME, One Lock St., Nashua has been placed in charge of arrangements. An online guest book is available at www.davisfuneralhomenh.com, (603-883-3401) "ONE MEMORY LIGHTS ANOTHER."

Buzz was such the "go to" in NH during its rapid growth years in the '70s, '80s, '90s. He was thoughtful, insightful, and always helpful and kind. "What does Buzz think?" was ultimately the question.
It was a pleasure and honor to have had the opportunity to work with him on important state issues.

He will be missed.
