Vivian Treat Obituary

Vivian Baker Treat, 92, wife of the late William W. Treat, a resident of Stratham, New Hampshire and Naples, Florida died peacefully at home Friday, September 1, 2017.

Mrs. Treat was an expert in English and colonial American history. Her passion for history led to a lifetime involvement with Strawbery Banke in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. She served as Overseer of Strawbery Banke and Chairman of the Historical Activities Committee of the National Society of Colonial Dames in America in the State of New Hampshire. She was a vice regent of Kenmore, the ancestral home of George Washington's sister, in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Mrs. Treat is the author of the New Hampshire chapter in Three Centuries of Custom Houses published by the National Society of Colonial Dames. For many years she was a trustee of the New Hampshire Historical Society and the New Hampshire Humanities Council. In 1994 she was elected as a Trustee of the James House Restoration in Hampton, New Hampshire.

Mrs. Treat is a direct descendant of Governor (formerly known as President) Thomas Coggeshall of Newport, Rhode Island, who was colonial governor of Rhode Island in the 17th century.

Her interest in art and culture caused her to travel widely, including visits to Japan, Taiwan, China, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Indonesia, India, Venezuela, and most of the European nations.

Mrs. Treat is a 1946 graduate of Wellesley College and the Lincoln School of Providence, Rhode Island. She has served as president of the Wellesley Club of New Hampshire and the Lawyers Wives of the New Hampshire Bar Association.

She is the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John W. Baker of Providence, RI, and the sister of the late Nancy Hemmerich of Newport, RI, and mother of Mary Esther Treat of Burlington, VT, and Jonathan B. Treat II of Belmont, MA, and the grandmother of Elizabeth Treat Stetson, Hilary Thompson Treat, and Joshua Atwood Treat.

A reception celebrating her life will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Sunday, October 22nd, at the Exeter Inn, 90 Front Street, Exeter, New Hampshire.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Strawbery Banke, P.O. Box 300, Portsmouth, NH 03802 (www.strawberybanke.org/donate.cfm).

Vivian was amazing in so many ways... smart, beautiful, loyal, courageous, energetic, opinionated, and loads of fun to be with. Her interests were many and wide-ranging. My family and were lucky to have been friends with her and Bill for many years and I only wish that we'd lived nearer together so that we could have seen each other more often. I will miss our chats and our times together. We send love and sympathy to Mary Esther, Dutch and all the family.

A lady of "CLASS". Master of the spoken and written word, Vivian brought out the best in all with whom she came in contact.
While she never spoke ill of others, her mastery of language made it possible for her to express disagreement in a very pleasant way.
Knowing Vivian was a true learning experience

Mrs. Treat was a very special lady. It was a great pleasure to work for her. I looked forward to spending the afternoon with her. Even though the time was too short I will forever be grateful and blessed for the times we shared. I know she is listening I have continued her work on the following correction " you lay a book down" and my brother and I. Sincerely Donna

Maybe Vivian should have been President of the United States; Vivian's voice and stature reminded me of Margaret Thatcher.
Mrs. Treat spoke beautifully with perfect grammar and diction along with eloquent syntax, and with substance; all the hallmarks of a person of learned individual.
