WOLFEBORO -- Doris L. (Stevens) Allen, 85, died Nov. 11, 2008, while surrounded by her family and caregivers at Riverside Rest Home in Dover.

She was born in Waterbury, Conn., on Aug. 30, 1923, to Harry Allan and Helen Agnes (Nellie) Stevens. She went to public schools in Waterbury and graduated from Crosby High School in 1941. She later moved to Boston to attend The Forsyth School for Dental Hygienists, where she became a certified and licensed dental hygienist.

While working as a dental hygienist in Boston, she met Frank R. Allen, whom she married in Pensacola, Fla. on Nov. 3, 1943. During the next several years, they started a family and moved to various locales in New England as her husband completed his studies at Bowdoin College and Yale University Medical School.

In 1952, the family moved to Wolfeboro, where they established a home and medical practice. They were divorced in 1979. She remained living in her home on Green Street, before moving to Riverside Rest Home in 2006.

She loved the ocean beaches, the lake, skiing and, in particular, working in her gardens.

Family includes children Frank Allen Jr. of Waterboro, Maine, Terri Allen of Wolfeboro, Stephen Allen of Chocorua, Thomas Allen of Dover, William Allen of Ossipee, and David Allen of Concord; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, a niece, nephews, cousins and friends.

SERVICES: Calling hours are Friday from noon to 2 p.m. at Baker-Gagne Funeral Home on Mill Street in Wolfeboro. Burial will follow in Lakeview Cemetery.
