She was born in Jersey City, N.J. on April 28, 1932, the daughter of William A. and D. Edna (Thompson) Sternkopf. To some she is known as Joanie, but to many she is lovingly called Lukie.
Lukie graduated from Summit, N.J., High School and earned a degree in physical education from Boston University. For a short time she lived in California, but most all of her adult life was spent in Newbury and the surrounding area.
Lukie loved the ocean. She could be found many a day sitting by a lighthouse or watching the waves on the beach. She also found great pleasure in gardening. She enjoyed helping others by caring for animals and house-sitting. Everyone she came in contact with loved Lukie for her generous heart and a laugh and smile that were infectious.
She is survived by her son, Joshua and his wife, Katie Perkins of Newbury and a granddaughter, Jamie. Her husband, James M. Perkins, died in 1984, her son, Nathan M. Perkins died in 2013 and her granddaughter, Micaela Perkins, died in 1999. Recently, she was lovingly cared for at the Clough Center.
SERVICES: Friends may call Friday, April 5, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Chadwick Funeral Service, 235 Main St. New London. A service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 6, at The First Baptist Church in Bradford. Please, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Clough Center, 273 County Road, New London, 03257.
