MILFORD - John Nicholas Bird, 76, died in his sleep at the Crestwood Nursing Home in Milford on Saturday, April 6, 2013.

Born in Framingham, Mass., he grew up in Wayland and Andover Mass., spending summers with family in York, Maine, from 1943 on. He graduated from Proctor Academy in New Hampshire and attended Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, N.Y. After completing military service in the Coast Guard, he worked on Long Island, N.Y., before moving to Milford, where he met and married Mabel A. Smith in 1970.
Prior to retiring in 2007, he was the owner of an auto supply business in Milford, servicing the southern New Hampshire region. An avid automobile enthusiast, he also enjoyed travel especially to Jamaica and Ecuador and cruises around the Caribbean.
He was predeceased by his father and mother, Johnston and Edith Bird of York, Maine, and his brother-in-law, Ernest Kittredge.
Surviving are his loving wife of 43 years, Mabel; his sister Susan Bird Kittredge of Princeton, N.J., and York, Maine; his nephew Neil Kittredge, his wife Kirsten Shaw and grandnephew, Asher of Brooklyn, N.Y.
