BRIDGEWATER - Joseph Kenneth "Ken" Forbes, 88, died at his home surrounded by his family on July 1, 2013, following a period of declining health. Born at home in New Hampton on Aug. 9, 1924, he was the son of Joseph and Lillian (Paine) Forbes.

Ken was raised in New Hampton where he attended the one- room school and graduated from Ashland High School at the age of 15. In January of 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving on the USS Meredith DD434. He was on the Meredith until it was sunk and then on the USS Iowa. Ken was a Purple Heart recipient.
After the war, he returned to New Hampton and married Eleanor (Thurber) Forbes, who predeceased him in 2009 after 60 years of marriage. In 1964 Ken move his family to Ashland. Ken operated his contracting business for many years, having built more than 60 fine homes in the area. He always said if he had a chance to do his life all over again he wouldn't have changed a thing.
Survivors include: one son, Stephen Forbes of Laconia; two daughters, Nancy Ward of Bridgewater and Janet Hiltz of Ashland; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; one sister, Phyllis Bates.
SERVICES Calling hours will be held on Friday, July 5, at Dupuis Funeral Home, 11 Hill Ave. in Ashland from noon to 3 p.m. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, July 6, at the Ashland Baptist Church, Main Street, Ashland at 11 a.m.; burial to follow at Green Grove Cemetery in Ashland.
