MANCHESTER - L. Ray Smith, a resident of Manchester, formerly of Nashua, and Tyngsboro, Mass., died in Bedford on Saturday, Feb. 2, 2013, after an extended illness, aged 100 years.

He was the husband of the late Elizabeth (Dodds) Smith and the late Helen (Cook) (Wright) Smith.

Born in Lowell, Mass., May 20, 1912, the son of the late Loren E. and Hazel (Ray) Smith, he received his education in the Lowell school system and was a graduate of Lowell High School with the class of 1930. He furthered his education at Wentworth Institute of Business for Electrical Engineering.

Ray worked at General Electric company as an inspector until he retired in 1974.

Mr. Smith was a lifetime member of the Dracut Grange No. 216, joining in 1928 at the age of 16. He received his 80-year pin and held virtually every office in subordinate and pomona granges. He was a past subordinate and pomona deputy of the state Grange, and held all degrees in the state and national Granges. He was a member of the Pentucket Lodge A.F. & A.M, which he joined in 1944.

He is survived by his best friend, Louise Blais, of Hooksett; a daughter, Sandra Stevens and her husband, Gerard of Thetford Center, Vt.; an adopted son, Christopher Smith and his wife, Jennifer of Virginia, and an adopted daughter, Lisa Smart and her husband, Jack of Bellingham, Mass.; his stepchildren, Walter Wright and his wife, Charlene of Chelmsford, Mass., Richard Wright and his wife, Diane of Westford, Mass., Paul Wright and his wife, Donna of Pepperell, Mass., and Sandra Bailey of North Chelmsford, Mass.; one sister-in-law, Ruth Wolfson of Littleton, Mass.; son-in-law, Donald Harrison of Kalamazoo, Mich.; also many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was the stepfather of the late Barbara Harrison.


SERVICES: Friends will be received at the Morse-Bayliss Funeral Home, 122 Princeton Blvd., Lowell, Mass., on Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. Mr. Smith's funeral service to be held at the funeral home on Saturday at 10 a.m. Interment in Edson Cemetery, Lowell, Mass.
