MANCHESTER - Mary M. Thornton, 94, of Manchester, died Nov. 14, 2012, at Elliot Hospital after a period of declining health.

Born in Manchester on Feb. 14, 1918, she was the daughter of Michael and Catherine (Heaney) Gildea. She was a lifelong resident of the Queen City.
She graduated from Saint Joseph High School for Girls, Class of 1936, and Hesser Business School.
In her early years, she worked at Pratt & Whitney. Later, she worked at International Shoe Company. Until her retirement, she was an office clerk with Varney Mills.
Mrs. Thornton was a longtime communicant of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church.
A loving and devoted wife and mother, she enjoyed the pleasures of family life. She will be remembered for her caring and selfless ways.
She was married 38 years to John J. Thornton, Sr. He died April 14, 1985. She also was predeceased by two brothers, Edward and James and by her sister, Geraldine.
Family members include two sons, John "Jack" J. Thornton, Jr. of Manchester and Kevin M. Thornton and his wife, Janet, of Manchester; her daughter, Deborah M. Walsh of Manchester; a granddaughter, a great-granddaughter; her sister, Anne Abbott of Hampton; several nieces and nephews.
SERVICES: Calling hours are Friday from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Connor-Healy Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 537 Union St., corner of Concord Street, Manchester.
The funeral will be held Saturday with a Mass of Christian burial to be celebrated at 9 a.m. in Saint Catherine of Siena Church, Webster Street, Manchester.
Burial will take place in Saint Joseph Cemetery, Manchester.
