SUNAPEE - Maurice E. Collins, 94, of North Road, died Wednesday, April 25, 2012, at his home.

He was born in Georges Mills on Jan. 19, 1918, the son of Verto R. and Ella M. (Pillsbury) Collins, Sr. He graduated from Sunapee High School in 1936 and then went to work on experimental aircraft for Granville Brothers in Massachusetts. During World War II and up until 1946, Mr. Collins worked for Chance Vought Aircraft in Connecticut.

In 1946, he moved back to Sunapee, where he built his home and was a carpenter working for his father at V.R. Collins and Sons and then for himself. Mr. Collins retired from carpentry in 1983.

He was a member of Sunapee Region Archers and was active in its formation. He was also a member of New Hampshire Bowmen and the NRA. Mr. Collins loved to hunt with a rifle and a bow. He enjoyed his CB radio and his ham radio. An excellent craftsman he could build anything, and when he was a young man and then again in his retirement, he made an ice boat. About six years ago, he took it out on Otter Pond for a ride.

Mr. Collins made radio-controlled model airplanes and then would go out in his boat and take pictures as the airplanes would soar overhead.

Having a real interest in flying, he took flying lessons as a young boy from Ed Spooner in Claremont and then he and his new bride took an airplane ride rather than a honeymoon. He also enjoyed fishing, smelting, clock repairing and chair caning.

He was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy (Chambers) Collins, in 2003.

Members of his family surviving include his daughter, Ann Johnson of Sunapee; two granddaughters, Kim and her husband, Brad Russell, of Sunapee, and Michelle Morrow of Albany, N.Y.; one great-grandson, Benjamin Collins Russell; nieces and nephews.
