DEERING - Robert R. Safford, 88, of Deering, passed away on Aug. 20, 2012, in Concord.

He is predeceased by his wife, Cecille J. Safford, and his son, Michael Safford.

Robert was born in Berlin, Wis. He served in Burma and World War II as a fighter pilot in the Army Air Forces. He also flew in the Korean War and Vietnam. He retired from the U.S. Air Force after 32 years of military service. He acquired numerous medals, including the Distinguished Flying Cross on six occasions. Throughout his career, he flew the P-40, 47, 51, F-80, 86, 94, 102, 104, and 106 in combat.

After retirement, he enjoyed many long years of life and travel with his beloved wife Cee. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, where he was a Eucharistic minister. Bob was an avid golfer, competed in 12 marathons, including the original run in Greece, and loved bicycling and downhill skiing.

He is survived by his daughter, Susan Barbettini and husband, Robert, of San Antonio, Texas, his daughter-in-law, Lori Safford of Pelham, brothers John Safford and wife, Rhonda, of Indian Wells, Calif., and James Safford and wife, Marti, of Milwaukee, Wis., and seven grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.

SERVICES: Calling hours will be held Friday, Aug. 24, 2012, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Holt-Woodbury Funeral Home, Hillsboro. A Mass will be held Saturday, Aug. 25, 2012, at 10 a.m. in St. Theresa Catholic Church, 158 Old West Hopkinton Road, Henniker. A reception immediately follows in the parish hall. Burial will be held at St. Mary Cemetery, Hillsboro, at 2 p.m.
